Phenomenon of Globalization (penomeno ng globalisasyon) –

worldwide phenomenon that involves the three major areas of


globalization
Three Major Areas of Globalization

1. Economic Globalization – social science concerned with the


production, distribution and consumption of goods and services

2. Cultural Globalization – relating to ideas, customs, and social


behavior of a society

3. Political Globalization – relating to the government or the public


affairs

Social Science – the scientific study of human society and social
relationships
Custom – common way of doing things
Social behavior – interactions among individuals, normally with the
same species

Phenomenon – fact or situation observed to exist or happen

Globalization – “globalize”; refers to the emergence of an


international network economic systems

worldwide scale (goods & services), economic resource of capital,
technology, and data.

Why do we have to study the Contemporary World?


1. To open the Horizons and be able to explore the world, curing
parochialism – outlook limited to one’s immediate country
2. To learn more about oneself – comparison of different
societies/cultures
3. To interact with it

GLOBALIZATION – growth of international trade, investment,


technology, and information all over the world; Advanced and Modern
Technology helped each nation to access borders and top increase the
economic growth of each country

- spread of products, investment and technology across national borders


and cultures. In economic terms, it describes the loosening of barriers to
the international trade

- increase of trade around the world especially by large companies

- process of interaction and integration among people, companies, and
governments worldwide; complex and multifaceted phenomenon –
considered by some as a form of capitalist expansion entailing the
integration of social and national economies into a global, unregulated
market economy (Wikipedia)

- not only an economic process, but also covers a lot of aspects –


political, social, technological; refers to the integration of national
markets to a wider global market signified by the increase free trade

- mean the onset of the borderless world – Ohmae, 1992

- a trans planetary process or a set of process involving increasing


liquidity and the growing multidirectional flows of people, objects,
places and information as well as the structures they encounter and

Expansion – creation of new social networks and multiplication of
existing connections cutting all boundaries
Intensification – expansion, stretching and acceleration of networks

- concept that is hard to define because in reality, it has a rapid nature; it


complexity and multi-faceted nature can be influenced by people who
define it.

Advantages of Globalization
1. Increase employment – local and abroad
2. Help Philippine Education improve – high quality education at low
costs
3. Improves the flow of information technology – helps increase the
economy
4. Improves the quality of goods and services – exportation motivates
production

Disadvantage of Globalization
1. Global Economic Instability – financial crisis in one country affects
countries close to it
2. Distraction of Philippine environment and the effect on human nature
– promotes laziness and unproductivity because of technology
3. Lack of International Governing Laws – abuse to OFW and getting
stranded
4. The slow death of Filipino Cultures – younger generations value
Western mentalities rather than Filipino ones
5. Rapid spread of viruses and diseases – AIDS, COVID-19
6. Increased Inequality within developed countries – abuse of low-
laboring countries
7. Global Currency devaluation – all countries want to be net exporters
8. Difficulty imposing regulations
9. Social Disruption for working classes in developed countries – prefer
low-labor countries/workers
10. Increased immigration to developed countries creates social tension

The effect of Globalization in the Philippines


- Help Filipino People know international status and rights of each
country nationwide
- Improve local and social culture and relations in the Philippines as well
as outside through investments and business opportunities
- Opportunities to all Filipinos to Work abroad
- helped Filipinos to know about global warming, climate change and
the natural resources in the country
- flexible communication among other nations and within the locale
- Flexible labor in international and local markets – enhances economic
growth

Other advantages
1. BPO is a major revenue earner
2. Without OFW remittances, the country would be significantly poorer
3. Knowledge transfer including both technical and soft skills
4. Opportunities for major Filipino companies to grow internationally
5. FDI which brings jobs, goods, and services
6. Competition means high quality products/services at reasonable prices

Opportunities
1. Greater competition in areas such as telecoms where duopoly is
harming the country
2. Improved banking including lower interest rates of debts and/or
higher interest rates on savings
