Assignment-II (ECE3010)

1. Design an end fire uniform linear array with only one maximum so that its directivity

is 30 dB. The spacing between the elements is , and its length is much greater than
8
the spacing. Determine the
(a) Number of elements
(b) Overall length of the array (in wavelengths)
(c) Half-power beam width (in degree)
(d) Progressive phase shift between the elements
2. Design an eight element -30 dB side lobe level Dolph-Tschebyscheff array of isotropic
elements placed symmetrically about the z-axis. Find the
(a) Amplitude excitation coefficients
(b) Array factor
3
(c) Angle where the null occurs for d  .
4
3. Eight isotropic sources are placed symmetrically along the z-axis, each separated from
3
its neighbour by an electrical distance kd  . For a binomial array, find
4
(a) the excitation coefficients
(b) array factor
(c) normalized power pattern
(d) Directivity of array
4. Calculate the free Space loss in a satellite communication where the satellite is at a
height of 32000 Km above the earth surface. Given GT = 10 dB, GR = 25 dB, and f = 4
GHz. What is the power received, if the power radiated is 200 Watts.
5. A police radio transmitter operating at a frequency 1620 KHz is required to provide a
ground wave propagation having a strength of at least 0.7 mV/ m at a distance of 18
Km. The transmitting antenna is expected to have an efficiency of 70% and produces a
radiated field that is proportional to the cosine of the angle of elevation. The ground is
such that conductivity of 5  105 mho/cm and a dielectric constant of 12 can be
expected. Determine the transmitted power required.
