There are different types of gases used as disinfectants and sterilizing agent. Can ammonia be used as a disinfectant?

it requires a lengthy period of time. The other limitation of the gas is that it is
flammable and toxic. To reduce the flammability it is often mixed with CO2.

A clean object can be sterilized if treated for 5 to 8 hours at 38°C or 3 to 4 hours

at 54°C when the relative humidity is maintained at 40 to 50% and the EtO
concentration at 700 mg/L.

Chlorine gas (preferentially used as Chlorine Dioxides) can also be used to

sterilize different places. Chlorine gas is halogen which denatures the proteins
and the membrane. The fatty acid of the cell membrane has unsaturation which
can be halogenated. The proteins are again denatured due to chlorination which
distorts its 3D structure. The use of Chlorine dioxides can be harmful to health
as it can act as carcinogenic. In addition, it is short-lived gas and easily
decomposes.

Vapourized hydrogen peroxides can also be used to decontaminate the

biological safety cabinets, operation theatres. It is produced by vaporising the
H2O2 using a nebulizer or vapouriser (vapour concentration is 140–1400 ppm).
It is a form of free radical which is harmful to microbes as well as humans. The
end products of the reaction are H2O and O2 which are not harmful. The
advantage of using VHP is that it efficiently kills the microbes and degrades into
harmless byproducts. It can work efficiently at different temperatures ranging
from 4° to 80°C.

Beta-propiolactone is also used as sterilizing gas. In its liquid form, it is used to

sterilize vaccines and drugs. Just like H2O2, it decomposes into less toxic
byproducts with time. The time taken for sterilisation is less than EtO with more
efficiency. However, it has low penetration power and can be carcinogenic in
nature.
