PRACTICAL WORK 3 : SETTING DHCP AND DNS SERVER

OBJECTIVES :

Upon completion the experiment, students should be able to:

1. Perform DHCP behavior of smartphone.
2. Configure PCs DHCP Addresses in LAN.
3. Perform Basic Router Configuration in LAN.

EQUIPMENTS AND COMPONENTS:

No Component Quantity

1 Smartphone 3

1 Computer 1 unit

2 Packet Tracer Software installed

THEORY :

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) Server

DHCP is a client-server protocol. A client is a device that is configured to use DHCP to request network
parameters from a DHCP server. DHCP server maintains a pool of available IP addresses and assigned
one of them to the host. A DHCP server can also provide some other parameters, such as: subnet mask,
default gateway, domain name, DNS server.

DNS (Domain Name System) Server

DNS is a network protocol used to translate hostnames into IP addresses.
DNS is not required to establish a network connection, but it is much more user friendly for human
users than the numeric addressing scheme.
Consider this example – you can access the Google homepage by typing 216.58.207.206, but it’s much easier
just to type www.google.com!

DEP30083/PW3 - TELECOMMUNICATION NETWORK

TASK A: Differentiate the characteristic of IPv4 and IPv6

1. From each smartphone, switch on the cellular provider network and then go to the
setting menu and find out the information about IP address that is provided for the
smartphone by the provider network.
2. Fill up the information given below.

Activities:

Note: All result must be attached with screenshot evidence

Fill up the Table 3.1 using information given from your smartphone

TASK B: DHCP behavior of smartphone

Extract data from IP address

1. Now, switch ‘ON’ the hotspot from the main device (smartphone) and then connect the
phone to another two devices(smartphone).
2. Please ensure that the other two devices are ‘OFF’ their origin provider network and using
the data network from main device (main smartphone).

QUESTION

1. What are the relationships IP address between main device to client devices when hotspot
network is connected referring to activities or at Figure 3.1?

-When a person connects to a wireless hotspot , two IP addresses are set i.e. a Private IP

address and a Public IP address . The wireless hotspot automatically allots the requesting
______________________________________________________________________________
device a Private IP address from a range of available IP address which is unique to that device .
______________________________________________________________________________
The device then connects to the internet via a public IP address .

Question:
1. Explain the function of DHCP Server, Router and DNS in Figure 3.2.

_______________________________________________________________________
DHCP Server – dynamically assigns an IP address an other network configuration parameters
to each device on a network so they can communicate with other IP networks.
______________________________________________________________________________

Router – routers perform the traffic directing functions on the internet. Data sent through the
internet , such as a web page or email , is in the form of data packets .
10

DNS – To translate domain names into IP Addresses , which computers can understand . It also
provides a list of mail servers which accept Emails for each domain name . Each domain name

RESULT AND DISCUSSION:

Note: results must be interpreted and discuss indicating understanding of the results.

______________________________________________________________________________
For the results from this labs , In the TASK A , I need to get a detail from our smartphone
such as IP address , subnet mask and host address . So, I use my smartphone to get a detail
______________________________________________________________________________
and get the answer . After that , in the TASK B , I need to connect the hotspot to the two
______________________________________________________________________________
different smartphone to get a host network . I use my parent smartphone to doing this task .
For the TASK C , I need to get the IP address using the DHCP addresses . I need to get the IP
______________________________________________________________________________
address all the PC , the router and the server . Beside that , I also need to do the ping
______________________________________________________________________________
command from the all PC to the router and get the result . The discussion is , DHCP is a client
