EXPERIMENT : 3 (a)
TITLE : PEER-TO-PEER NETWORK WITH 2 PC

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES (CLO):

CLO 2: Construct a simple LAN or WLAN in accordance to IEE or
TIA/EIA-568-A/B wiring standard and network troubleshooting
using network simulation tool (P4, PLO5)

OBJECTIVE : At the end of this experiment, students should be able:

i. Analyze the IP address classes, subnet addresses and
subnet mask in the laboratory.
ii. Deploy IP addressing in a peer-to-peer network.

THEORY :

A host needs an IP address to participate on the Internet. The IP address is a logical

network address that identifies a particular host. It must be properly configured and unique to
communicate with other devices on the Internet.
An IP address is assigned to the Network interface connection for a host. This connection
is usually a Network Interface Card (NIC) installed in the device. Examples of end-user devices
with network interfaces include workstations, servers, network printers and IP phones. Some
servers can have more than one NIC and each of these has its own IP address. Router interfaces
that provide connections to an IP network will also have an IP address.
Every packet sent across the Internet has a source and destination IP address. This
information is required by networking devices to ensure the information gets to the destination
and any replies are returned to the source.

EQUIPMENT :
1. Two Windows 10 Education PCs, each with an installed and
functional Network Interface Card (NIC)
2. An Ethernet cross-over cable to connect the PCs.

PROCEDURE :
Step 1: Connect the PCs to create a peer-to-peer network as Figure 3.1 below.

PC1 PC2

Figure 3.1: Peer-to-peer networking

a. Obtain an Ethernet crossover cable to connect the two PCs.

b. Plug one end of the cable into the Ethernet NIC of PC1. Plug the other end of the cable
into the Ethernet NIC of PC2. As you insert the cable, you should hear a click which
indicates that the cable connector is properly inserted into the port.

Step 2: Verify physical connectivity

a. After the Ethernet crossover cable is connected to both PCs, take a close look at each
Ethernet port. A link light (usually green or amber) indicates that physical connectivity has
been established between the two NICs. Try unplugging the cable from one PC then
reconnecting it to verify that the light goes off then back on
b. Search Control Panel as shown in Figure 3.2, click the View Network Status and Task
in Network and Internet icon as shown in Figure 3.3. Click Change Adapter Setting as
shown in Figure 3.4 shows an Ethernet (active local area connection) as shown in Figure

c. If the Local Area Connection does not indicate that it is connected, troubleshoot by
repeating Steps 1 and 2. You may also want to ask your instructor to confirm that you are
using an Ethernet crossover cable.

Step 3: Configure IP settings for the two PCs

a. Configure the logical IP addresses for the two PCs so that they are able to communicate
using TCP/IP. On PC1, go to Control Panel click the View Network Status and Task in
Network and Internet and click Change Adapter Setting then right click the connected
Local Area Connection icon. Choose Properties from the pull-down menu.
b. Using the scroll bar in the Local Area Connection Properties window, scroll down to
highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/1P).Refer the Figure 3.6. Click the Properties button.

c. Refer to Figure 3.7 and Table 3.0 for IP Address setting

IP address subnet mask

PC2 192.168.1.2 255.255.255.0
Table 3.0: IP Address setting

d. Click OK, which will close the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window. Click the
Close button to exit the Local Area Connection Properties window.

Step 4: Verify IP connectivity between the two PCs

a. Go to Control Panel, click the View Network Status and Task in Network and Internet
icon. Click Window Defender Firewall as shown in Figure 3.8.
b. If the firewall settings are enabled, click the Off (not recommended) radio button to disable
the firewall as shown in Figure 3.9. The setting will be re-enabled in a later step. Click OK
in this dialog box and the following to apply this setting.

Figure 3.9: Disable the firewall

c. Turn of the antivirus also.

d. Now that the two PCs are physically connected and configured correctly with IP addresses,
we need to make sure they communicate with each other. The ping command is a simple
way to accomplish this task. The ping command is included with the Windows 10 education
operating system.
e. On PC1, go to Start, type cmd (command prompt), and then click OK. A Window
Command Prompt window will appear as shown in the following figure (Figure 3.10)
f. At the > prompt, type ping 192.168.1.2 and press Enter. A successful ping will verify the
IP connectivity. Record the result in Table 3.2
g. Repeat this procedure for PC2 but ping 192.168.1.1. Record the result in Table 3.3.
h. Close the Windows command prompt window on both PCs.

Step 5: Change IP address for PC2

a. On PC2, go to the Control Panel, double click the Network Connections icon, and then right
click the connected Local Area Connection icon. Choose Properties from the pull -down
menu.
b. Using the scroll bar in the Local Area Connection Properties window, scroll down to
highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Click the Properties button.
c. Change the logical IP address for PC2 from 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.2.2 and leave the subnet
mask set to 255.255.255.0.
d. Click OK, which will close the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window. Click the
Close button to exit the Local Area Connection Properties window.
e. Test network connectivity between the 2 PCs
i. On PC1, go to Start, type cmd, and then click OK. A Window command prompt
window will appear.
ii. At the > prompt, type ping 192.168.2.2 and press Enter. Record the result in Table
3.3.

Step 6: Change IP address for PC1

a. Using the procedure previously described, change the logical IP address for PC1 from
192.168.1.1 to 192.168.2.99 and leave the subnet mask set to 255.255.255.0.
b. Click OK, which will close the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window. Click the
Close button to exit the Local Area Connection Properties window.
c. The two PCs are still on the same physical Ethernet network.
d. Test network connectivity between the 2 PCs
i. On PC2, go to Start, type cmd, and then click OK. A Window command prompt
window will appear.
