3 OPERATING PROCEDURE OF THE FS-D FILLING STATION

In this chapter the operating of the filling sequence for filling an open Dewar is explained.

WARNING

Before operating the system the operator must read this manual, and must make himself familiar with
the equipment. The operator must be familiar with working with cryogenic liquids, and he must be
familiar with working with the Dewars to be filled. The operator must have read and understood the
safety guidelines and operating guidelines of Demaco Holland bv, the Dewar supplier and the liquefied
gasses supplier. Failing to do so may lead to severe injury.

3.1 Open Dewar

1. Switch on the main power, the power on light will glow.

2. Position a Dewar close to the filling point. Make sure this Dewar is positioned horizontally, and put
firmly on the ground.

WARNING

A Dewar containing liquid nitrogen must be positioned firmly. A tilting Dewar may spill liquid nitrogen,
causing severe injury. Read to the documentation of the Dewar supplier for proper handling of the Dewar.

3. Put the filling hose in the Dewar to be filled. Make sure the hose is held firmly, and can not be blown
out of the Dewar due to forces created by the flow of nitrogen.

WARNING

Failing to hold the filling hose firmly may lead to liquid nitrogen spilling around, causing severe injury. Wear
protective gloves, glasses and clothing at all times.

4. Now the green filling button can be pressed.

5. The filling valve will open and the Dewar starts filling.

PERIL TO LIFE

During filling nitrogen gas will form. This gas is odourless and colourless. Inhaling this gas may lead to
asphyxiation. Make sure proper ventilation is present or use an independent breathing device.

Rev.02 (2014.12) OL Page 7 of 9

Operating manual Filling station type FS-D

6. When the filling button is released the filling valve will close, and the filling will stop.
7. Remove the filling hose from the Dewar.

WARNING

Because a small amount of liquid nitrogen may still be available in the filling hose, liquid nitrogen may poor
out of the open end of the filling hose. This may lead to severe injury when touching skin or eyes. Always
wear protective gloves, glasses and clothing.

8. The hose can be placed back in the original position and the filling station is ready for filling the next
Dewar.

WARNING

Don’t leave the hoses loose on the floor, as someone may stumble and fall causing injury.

9. When no more filling is required, switch off the main power.

2 FS-V FILLING STATION GENERAL

WARNING

The operator has to wear leather safety gloves (also covering the wrist), safety glasses or face shield and a
leather apron at all times.

Closed Dewar filling starts by connecting the fill hose and the return hose to the Dewar. The filling hose is
used for filling the Dewar with liquid nitrogen and the return hose is used for leading the nitrogen gases
to a safe area. The return line is equipped with a temperature sensor inside the housing. This
temperature sensor detects whether the Dewar is full. The filling valve will be closed automatically.
The system will shut down when the temperature sensor is malfunctioning. In case of an emergency, the
control box is provided with a quick-stop. This stop will shut down the entire system.

HINT
The quick stop button shuts down the entire system.

WARNING

The temperature of the gas blowing out of the FS-V Filling station may be as low as -196 C. The position
of the GN2outlet and the direction of the gas flow should be chosen in such a way that there is no danger
for people or vulnerable equipment. Secondly large ice build-ups are possible without proper insulation.

Rev.03 (2014.10) OL Page 6 of 10

Operating manual Filling station type FS-V

PERIL OF LIFE

When the outlet of the FS-V Filling station is exhausting in a confined space, danger of suffocation exists.
This being because the amount of nitrogen from the FS-V Filling station can displace the air (oxygen)
from the space. In this case exhausting the gas to a safe remote atmosphere is necessary.

3 OPERATING PROCEDURE OF THE FS-V FILLING STATION

In this chapter the operating of the filling sequence for filling of a closed Dewar is explained.

3.1 Closed Dewar

1. Switch on the main power, the light will glow.
2. Connect the return hose to the gas relief connection of the Dewar. This connection is used to blow off
gaseous nitrogen from the Dewar to a safe area.
3. Connect the filling hose to the outlet connection of the Dewar. The outlet connection of the Dewar is
the connection which is used for liquid withdrawal when the Dewar is used.

WARNING

Make sure the connection of the Dewar is the same type and size of coupling as provided on the hoses.
During filling pressure will be available in the system. When a coupling is not connected properly, liquid
nitrogen may be spilled, causing severe injury when touching skin or eyes.

WARNING

Make sure the fill hose and the return hose are connected properly to the connections of the Dewar.
When the hoses are interchanged, the Dewar will not fill, but will empty the containing liquid nitrogen
through the return hose very quickly. The filling will stop automatically, but will not prevent a considerate
amount of liquid nitrogen blowing through the return hose. Refer to the specifications of the blow off line
whether this line is capable of withstanding liquid nitrogen.
4. When the connections are secured the start filling button can be pressed, the light turns off.

Rev.03 (2014.10) OL Page 7 of 10

Operating manual Filling station type FS-V

5. The filling valve will open and the Dewar starts filling. Immediately after start filling, nitrogen gas will
flow from the return line. This will make some noise. Don't let this frighten you. As soon as the Dewar is
cold, the gas flow will reduce, and the noise will decrease. The amount of noise is depending on the
type, size and temperature of the Dewar.
6. When the temperature sensor in the degas unit detects liquid nitrogen or the operator pushes the stop
button, the filling valve will be closed. The light will glow.
7. Make sure the filling sequence has stopped and close the valves on the Dewar.
8. Press the relief button, the pressure in the hoses will be relieved.
9. Disconnect the return line from the Dewar

WARNING

Always beware of the possibility that nitrogen at cryogenic temperatures may be present while
disconnecting the hose. This may lead to severe injury when touching skin or eyes, therefore always wear
protective gloves, glasses and clothing. Only after all pressure is relieved the hose may be completely
disconnected from the Dewar.

10. Disconnect the filling hose from the Dewar.

WARNING

Because a small amount of liquid nitrogen may still be available in the filling hose, liquid nitrogen may
poor out of the open end of the filling hose. This may lead to severe injury when touching skin or eyes.
Always wear protective gloves, glasses and clothing.

11. The hoses can be placed back in their original position and the FS-V Filling station is ready for filling the
next Dewar.

WARNING

Don’t leave the hoses loose on the floor, as someone may stumble and fall causing injury.

12. When no more filling is required, switch off the main power.
