Lesson Plan

Name of Lesson: Hugs for the Dinosaurs!

Grade Level Appropriateness: 5th grade

Technology Content Standard Addressed: #3 3B standard for the National Students evaluate

the accuracy, perspective, credibility, and relevance of information, media, data or other

resources

Other Content Standard Addressed: Research to Build and Present Knowledge:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.5.7 : Conduct short research projects that use several sources to

build knowledge through investigation of different aspects of a topic.

Objective: Students will understand how to effectively use computer assisted media creation

tools to add in texts and images to create a storybook that will be used to test their ability to

research a topic, deliver that information to their peers and infer using writing skills.

Materials needed to facilitate the lesson: Laptop, Book Creator provided by Google, Google

Docs, Google Drive

Suggest group size: Individual

Procedures:

1. Students are to research online using Google

2. They are to use Google Doc to save research they find online

3. Their Google account is the same username and password the students use daily to login into

the computers.

4. Their topic is to research one specific dinosaur, ex The T-Rex


5. They are to research where that dinosaur lived, what they ate and how big their dinosaur

was.

6. Students are then to find one theory of what happened to the Dinosaur species and use one

resource to support this theory

7. Students are also to find a minimum of 5 pictures of their Dinosaurs and save to their Google

Drive to use later. Pictures can be in a cartoon style or more realistic, it is their choice.

8. Once research is finished and ALL research is saved into a Google Doc, students then can

move on

9. Students are to login into BookCreator, an extension created by Google

10. Their username and passwords are their Google Accounts that they use daily to login to their

computers

11. Students will be prompted to enter a code:

12. Once they are connected, students will be automatically enrolled into Ms. Karen’s 5th Grade

Class
13. Students are to create their own books by selecting the yellow “New Book” icon in the upper

right-hand cover.
14. Students will be prompted to pick a size; they are to pick Landscape 4:3 Comic

15. Once the blank book is generated, students can customize their books, by changing the color

theme, fonts, etc..


16. Students can click on the plus icon to insert media, comics or shapes.
17. Students can use the plus icon to access the media section to import images, pen drawings,

text or record audio.

18. To record audio students must pick the record icon.


19. Students will be prompted with a pop-up that reads “app.bookcreator.com wants to use your

microphone” Students can pick the allow icon.


20. Students will be entered into the recording studio. Students are to select the yellow “New

Recording” icon on the upper right-hand corner.


21. Students will then be able to record and elect to use their recording or make a new one.
22. Under the comic section, students can add comic style panels, speech, though, text o

stickers.
23. Under the shapes section, students can insert shapes such as squares, circles, lines, etc.
24. Students may customize their books by further by selecting the i icon.
25. Students can change their backgrounds using the color, paper, borders, patterns or textures

categories.

26. Students are to create their own storybooks, requirements will be outlined below
a. There is to be a cover page. The name of their story is up to them, but the cover must

include the name of their dinosaur, their student name, the date and a creative cover

using at least one picture.

b. The first section of the book is to present to the reader information about their

dinosaur

c. There is to be a page added for each topic

i. Where and when their dinosaur lived (3-5 sentences)

ii. What they ate (2-4 sentences)

iii. How big their dinosaur was, including weight, height and any other

dimensions the students wish to add. (1-3 sentences)

iv. A page dedicated to interesting facts. (3-6 facts)

v. Theory of how the dinosaurs died and source supporting it (3-5 sentences)

vi. Each page is to have a minimum of 2 pictures

d. There has to be a page with the exact title “But what if (name of dinosaur) survived?)

i. This title can be in any style the students would like, but the wording must be

the same, no audio required.

e. There is to be a page added for each topic in this next section for the students to infer

what life would like with their dinosaur roaming around today. The questions

associated with each topic is to help the students gain inspiration

i. Infer how the relationship with dinosaurs and people would be. How would

dinosaurs and people interact? Would people still be the top species? Would

dinosaurs be considered pets or predators in today’s world? (3-5 sentences)


ii. What would dinosaurs eat in today’s world? Would they eat McDonalds?

Other animals? Would we feed them?

iii. Infer where the dinosaurs would live. Where would dinosaurs sleep? Do they

live in a zoo? Or are they roaming free? (3-5 sentences)

iv. Infer if you think the dinosaurs would live for a long time with humans. Do

you think the dinosaurs would still go extinct in today’s world? Do you think

dinosaurs would be happy in today’s world? Why or why not. (4-6 sentences)

f. There is to be a final page with the resources the students used

i. The title of this page should be “I would like to thank….”

ii. Then the students are to list the name of the website and each URL used in

alphabetical order by the name of the website.

iii. There is no minimum or maximum to sources

g. There is to be audio on every page. Audio can be a short sound effect, and or

students can read the story.

Assessment: This is an ongoing week project and will be worth 50 points. Full points will be

awarded to students who:

1. Have a cover page with their dinosaur name, their own name, date and picture of

dinosaur. (2 points)

2. Has fully explained each piece of research asked for and meets sentence requirements.

Also has cited one source and backed up their theory for extinction with that source. (20

points)

3. Has made fully developed assumptions and supports it using logic for each topic given.

(20 points)
4. Has 2 images per page (2 points)

5. Has audio on each page (4 points)

6. Has references page (2 points)
