IDEAZ B: SUSTAINABLE TEMPORARY SHELTER

An estimated 11 million Syrians have fled their homes since the outbreak of the civil war in
March 2011. Now, in the sixth year of war, 13.5 million are in need of humanitarian assistance.
Among those escaping the conflict, the majority have sought refuge in neighbouring countries
or within Syria itself.

Refugee shelters are structures ranging from the most temporary tent accommodation through
transitional shelter to building permanent houses and settlements and include the most basic
kind of ad hoc structure. They are created in the aftermath of a conflict or natural disaster as a
temporary residence for victims who have lost or abandoned their homes. Living in these
shelters refugees may face crowded, noisy, dirty, disease filled grounds where thousands of
families are cramped together and surviving day by day. When considering emergency,
temporary, housing the following revolve around the success of such shelter and relief efforts:
Cost, availability, transport time, setup time, quality, durability, size, security, weather proof,
design/ look, privacy, noise, Cleanliness, distance to work/ school/ religious services/
washroom.

Kavad Yatra is annual pilgrimage of devotees of Shiva, known as Kānvarias, to Hindu pilgrimage
places of Haridwar, Gaumukh and Gangotri in Uttarakhand and Sultanganj in Bihar to fetch holy
waters of Ganges River, Ganga Jal, which is later offered at their local Shiva temples The Yatra
takes place during the sacred month of Shravan (Saawan) (July -August), according to the Hindu
calendar.

During the Basant Panchmi, Maha Shivratri and other important Hindu occasions, the number
of Kanwariyas increase many fold. During a calendar year approx. 2 Crores Kanwariyas perform
this holy journey. Heavy security measures are undertaken by the government and the traffic
on Delhi-Haridwar national highway (National Highway 58) is diverted for the period.

CHALLENGE
This time we are looking at innovative techniques that can be thought of, to make sustainable
temporary shelter which can be used as module on waterfronts such that it can be replicated in
our town for kawad yatris. Our emphasis is directed to see new methods or enhancement in
existing one which are cost effective and accessible to all.
