Statement: The number of road accidents continues to rise from year to year.

Suggest how
road accidents can be prevented.

In my opinion, there a number of ways for us to prevent road accidents.

The first way is by pulling into the traffic slowly and carefully. We have to stop our
vehicle, look, listen and be wary of our surrounding. We should always be aware of the blind
spots, including those in rear view mirror and behind the windshield pillars or road signs.
Aside from that, whenever we are at an intersection, look for both directions at least twice
before proceeding. Always remember that vehicles can appear almost out of nowhere very
quickly especially in a busy traffic, so exercise the utmost caution when pulling into a
cramped intersection or traffic.

The next precaution that we should take to avoid any kind of road accident is to never rush
while driving especially at the traffic lights. We always have to watch out for red light
runners. Take time before entering an intersection when the light turns green. Look both
ways and be sure that no one is trying to speed through before proceed with our driving. Do
not forget to exercise extreme caution when passing heavy vehicles such as trucks and
lorries. Truck or lorry drivers have a wide blind spot by their right-hand side, so we have to
be careful when driving next to them.

Other way to prevent road accidents is by always focus on our driving. We have to keep
our eyes on the road at all time. Avoid playing or getting busy with hand phones at all cost
while driving. While on the road, we have to at least keep one hand on the steering wheel
when driving. Reduce in-car distractions such as changing radio stations, texting, eating,
drinking or any other activities that will require us to momentarily taking our hands off the
wheel. If we have a phone call coming, use earphones instead of taking the call like usual. If
earphones are unavailable, look for a safe and good spot to stop our vehicle by the road and
proceed taking the phone call. A gust of heavy wind, pothole or a blown tire could send the
vehicle into another lane and cause a serious accident especially when the steering wheel is
left unattended.

Aside from that, we also have to always be wary with wild animals when driving to avoid
road accidents. Animals have a habit of suddenly popping out onto the road especially in
highways. We also have watch out for children when driving. If we are driving in a residential
neighborhood where kids are present, slow down our car and watch the surrounding closely
to avoid any accident.

We can also avoid road accident by always taking a good care of our vehicles. Perform
vehicle maintenance regularly to always ensure that our vehicles are in a good shape. We
can avoid any form of vehicle failures while driving by frequently performing vehicle
maintenance before a road trip, thus preventing any possible road accident.

The last way to prevent road accident is to always aware and abide to the speed limit
while driving. We often heard of road accidents that happened due to the drivers exceeded
the speed limit stated by the law. A speeding vehicle is a lot harder to control especially on a
slippery road. Sudden braking on speeding vehicles could also lead to tragic road accidents.
By abiding to the speed limit, we can have a better control of our vehicle and avoid road
accidents especially when any unwanted incidents happened on the road such as crossing
animals or brake failures.
