What is wire rope ?

Definition:
 A Wire rope is an important item of engineering materials in mining & many other
engineering and industries.
 It is use for transmit the power over long distance from one pulley to another.
• example: - mine hoist , cranes etc.
Types of wire rope
Types based on use of rope

1. Standing ropes :

• Carry the burden or load but are more or less stationary.

• Example :- guide rope, bucket supporting ropes etc.
• 2 .Running ropes :

• Have to undergo frequent movement or running often with varying loads.

• Example :- in winding, haulage, CCM, excavators cranes etc.

Types based on construction of rope

1.Stranded ropes :

• Construction :-

• Built up of strands and each strand

consist of concentrically twisted wire

• these ropes are made by twisting thin

metal wires which increases the
strength of the rope.

Nomenclature of rope

1)6x7
 It means , it is made up of 6 strands & each
strand is also up of 7 wires.

2)6x19
 It means , it is made up of 6 strands & each
strand is also up of 19 wires.
