Engagement
There was no such thing as an engagement or a marriage ceremony to the Anglo-
Saxon man. He would just choose a wife and, if necessary, forcibly remove her from
her family home to his own home, where she would cook, clean and bear his
children. By the 6th century, it was deemed illegal for a man to 'steal' the woman of
his choice from her family. Then the fathers recognised the value of their daughters
as an asset; they became more protective, and introduced a 'bride price.' Daughters
were then considered as the property of their fathers. The fathers now expected
prospective husbands to show they could be good providers by offering the family
valuable gifts, or by working off the price of the daughter's hand in marriage.
Centuries later, this was reversed, when the fathers began to offer a dowry to their
daughter's prospective husband. The idea was to insure against divorce, as the
woman now brought something into the marriage. If the marriage dissolved, the
husband would no longer have control of the dowry. Today, an engagement is not
legally accepted, although it was somewhat different in Victorian times. The future
groom would first request permission of his prospective bride's father for his
daughter's 'hand in marriage'. With permission granted, the groom would make the
proposal. After the proposal was accepted, the groom had a legal obligation to marry
his betrothed and, if he jilted her, she could sue for 'breach of promise'. Although a
proposal of marriage was generally the responsibility of men, tradition permitted
women to propose on 29 February. Today, it's not uncommon for women to propose
on any day of the year. The engagement ring was introduced by the Romans,
following their conversion to Christianity. It is worn on the third finger of the left hand,
due to the Greek belief that this particular finger was connected to the heart.

Nemzetek konyhája – az angol konyha
Az angol konyháról megoszlanak a vélemények. Elsősorban a franciák tesznek csípős

megjegyzéseket e témában. Francia eredetű az a mondás is, miszerint „Angliában vannak a
világ legjobb élelmiszerei, amíg nem kerülnek a konyhába.” Az eredeti angol konyha
készítésmódjai valóban egyszerűek. Szeretik a kiadós, jó minőségű húsokat, jóízű halakat,
laktató lepényeket, pudingokat.
Az angolok azonban állítják, hogy konyhájuk mégis igen különleges, hiszen ételeikre nagy
hatással volt a francia konyha és az akkor még brit gyarmatnak számító India, ahonnan sok
fűszer, fűszerkeverék származott.
Az angoloknál kialakult egy sajátos étkezési rend, mely a fogalommá vált „angol reggelivel”
indul. Gyümölcslével kezdenek, melyet a zabkása követ – vagy inkább követett. Napjainkban
már inkább a divatosabb és talán egészségesebb müzlit választják. Majd a pirítós
következik, melyet vajjal, mézzel, dzsemmel kennek meg, ki-ki a maga ízlése szerint.
Világszerte ismert reggelijük a sültsonka tojással, illetve a húsos sültszalonna tojással.
Reggeli után jön az elmaradhatatlan fekete tea, melyet tejszínnel, tejjel vagy önmagában, de
semmiképpen sem cukorral fogyasztanak.
A hal- és rákételek mellett birkát, baromfi- és marhahúst fogyasztanak leggyakrabban. A
marhahúsnak számos elkészítési módját ismerik.
Az italok közül a legkedveltebbek a whisky, a gin és a vodka. Mivel Angliában nem terem
meg a szőlő, kénytelenek a bort importálni, melyek közül a francia és a német borokat, ezen
belül a vörösborokat részesítik előnyben. Az angolok nagy sörivók, de a hazai sörökkel
szemben inkább az importsört kedvelik.

Different ways to meet the locals when you travel

Arriving in a small, dusty village in 1840s India, Abdullah used to head straight for the
local market. As an itinerant merchant, he set up his shop with trays of dates, ginger
and tobacco. The polite, young vendor’s generous portions attracted customers who
did not mind his steady stream of questions. And he used to ask endless questions
rather than selling. This way, despite being a stranger, Abdullah usually plunged right
into the heart of village life. Whenever he saw a house filled with music and guests,
he just walked through the door. Abdullah felt a clean turban and a polite bow were
as good as an invitation. Usually he was welcomed.
The Indian villagers who met Abdullah undoubtedly thought some of his habits were
a bit strange, especially his questions. But his behavior and the fact that he spoke
with an accent and mispronounced some words made them believe that he was from
Persia. But Abdullah spoke with an accent not because he was a Persian, but
because he was English. Abdullah was actually Richard Francis Burton, an officer in
the British army and the explorer who later searched East Africa for the Nile River’s
source.
While he was being stationed in India, he wanted to learn more about the local life,
so he was roaming the towns and countryside disguised as the merchant Abdullah.
He stained his skin with henna, wore native clothes, grew a long beard, let his hair
grow to shoulder length and learned the language.

Zeppelin airships to fly over London again
A German airship operator (DZR GmbH) is to start Zeppelin sightseeing flights over
London's most famous landmarks from next month. After two years of planning, five
sightseeing flights of London onboard a Zeppelin airship will take off every day from July 10.
The flights will take off from east London and climb to 2,000 ft above the Thames.
Tours will last between 30 minutes and an hour and will accommodate 12 passengers
per flight, with every ticket offering a window seat in the 35-foot long cabin. The airship will
arrive in the UK on July 6 and commercial flights will operate from July 10 after four days of
test flights. Flights will be on offer until August 21 – the short season owing to safety
restrictions, which stop the airship from flying during heavy winds, thunderstorms or fog.
The cabin has seats for 12 passengers, one pilot and one flight attendant and although
there’s a toilet onboard, in-flight catering is unlikely. The 30-minute flights will travel from
Upminster to Greenwich Palace, the 45-minute flights will reach St Paul’s and the 60-minute
flights will get as far as Buckingham Palace before returning east.
The www.staroverlondon.co.uk website is expected to go live within a few days and
corporate bookings are already being taken over the phone. Tickets will cost between £185
and £360 depending on the length of the tour, but the company will also raise revenue from
selling advertising. This morning, a deal was reached with Stella Artois to be the sole sponsor
of the flights - its logo will adorn the sides of the Zeppelin.
London isn’t the first destination for Zeppelin Tours. Airship Initiatives currently
offers Zeppelin flights from Friedrichshafen on the shores of Lake Constance in southern
Germany.

teljes anonimitásba burkolóznak. Ezért az útbaigazítást kérı ne csodálkozzon, ha viszonyítási

mindenhol feltalálják magukat, így eltévedés esetén nyugodtan lehet rájuk hagyatkozni.
A souq-nak nevezett helyi piacok meglátogatása még az isztambuli bazáron edzıdött

turistának is élményszámba megy. Dubai souq-jai azonban jóval túlnıtték a bolhapiac

Americans have been captivated by a new kind of entertainment called "reality

television." More than two dozen reality shows are on the air so far, and more are in the
works. Each week, ordinary people appear in unusual situations, trying to win $1 million,
going out on a date with a stranger, or displaying their abilities in on-air talent shows.
Simon Cowell, a London-based music producer for the programme called American
Idol*, says the program searches for talented singers, awarding the best with a recording
contract. He was also elected a judge on the program, and says he's never shy about bursting
anyone's bubble. In fact, he's brutally honest. "I've been doing auditions for 25 years, and the
nature of auditions is to tell the truth.
The reality series Survivor* watches ordinary people as they struggle to survive under
harsh conditions. Last season, contestants were left on a tropical island in Thailand. Winner
Brian Heidik says the show was about sleep deprivation, lack of food – and patience.
Contestants face challenges from nature and from their fellow contestants, who vote them one
by one off the island. The winner receives $1 million. Last season’s winner, Mr. Heidik
started with a strategy to outwit other contestants. "See, most people forget why they're out
there. I kind of stuck to a plan. I reaffirmed to myself every day why I was there: the money,
the money, the money, the money," he says.
Executive producer Mark Burnett says Survivor has a loyal following of 20 million
viewers because the series, in his opinion, is just as engaging as a movie, which includes
travel experience, compelling characters, and good story telling.
Mike Fleiss produces several reality series, including The Bachelor* and The
Bachelorette*, which track the dating adventures of a single man and woman. "These
shows are prepared within a very tight time limit, that is you shoot round the clock.”.

We arrived in July – just in time to show our three girls their new school. It has four teachers,
three classes and 60 pupils. It’ll be very different from the daily routine in London – no

Ryanair has been voted the world’s least favourite airline as its ultra-frugal approach
to flying wins millions of customers but very few fans.
The Dublin-based airline is joined on the list of aviation shame by Heathrow, which
was voted the world’s least favourite airport in a survey by travel website TripAdvisor.
In a poll of 4,000 travellers around the world, unfriendly staff were cited as the worst
part of the Ryanair experience, followed by delays and poor legroom. Low-cost travel fares
badly in the study, with easyJet coming second to its Irish rival in a questionnaire of
travellers.
Ryanair has transformed itself from a small company into one of Europe’s biggest
airlines over two decades. However, its obsessive focus on low prices has ruined its public
image. In one infamous incident, it charged a man with cerebral palsy £18 to use a
wheelchair, while in another example of cost-cutting zeal, pilots and cabin crew pay for their
own training and uniforms.
Chief executive Michael O’Leary is the industry’s most outspoken executive, having
advocated the shooting of travel agents and urged passengers concerned about the
environmental impact of flying to sell their cars and walk instead.
Ryanair said: “The 42 million passengers who will fly with Ryanair this year have

Motorcycle accident
A man was working on his motorcycle on his patio and his wife was in the kitchen,
when the motorcycle accidentally slipped into gear. The man, still holding onto the handle
bars, was dragged through the glass patio doors by the motorbike into the house. His wife,
hearing the crash, ran into the dining room and found her husband lying on the floor, cut and
bleeding. She ran to the phone and summoned the ambulance. Because they lived on a fairly
large hill, the wife went down the several flights of stairs to the street to escort the paramedics
to her husband.
After the ambulance arrived and transported the man to the hospital, the wife pushed
the motorcycle outside. Seeing that petrol was spilled on the floor, she got some paper towels,
cleaned up the petrol, and threw the towels in the toilet. The man was treated and released to
come home. Upon looking at the shattered patio door and his damaged motorcycle, he became
despondent, went to the bathroom, sat down on the toilet and smoked a cigarette. After
finishing the cigarette, he flipped it between his legs into the toilet bowl. The wife, who was
in the kitchen, heard the loud explosion and her husband screaming.
She ran into the bathroom and found that her husband’s trousers had been blown away
and he was suffering burns on the back of his legs. After she had called the ambulance again
the very same paramedic crew was dispatched. The paramedics loaded the husband on to the
stretcher and began carrying him to the street. While they were going down the stairs, one of
them asked the wife how the husband had burned himself. She told them and the paramedics
started laughing so hard that one of them slipped dumping the husband out from the stretcher.
He fell down the remaining stairs and broke his arm.

Snakes Charmers Stuck on Border

More than 200 people, most of them snake-charmers and their children, were
trapped on the India-Bangladesh border on Monday as the neighbours argued about
which country they came from. Indian officials said they were Bangladeshi nationals
who tried to cross over into Indian territory on Friday morning but were stopped by
border guards who asked Bangladeshi troops to take them back. Bangladeshi
officials refused to accept the snake-charmers, saying the 213 people were Indian
Muslims being pushed into Bangladesh by India's border guards. "These people are
Bangladeshi gypsies who are professional snake-charmers. They are poor and have
been stuck on the border for over three days," P.P. Gupta, deputy inspector-general
of India's Border Security Force told Reuters by telephone. The snake-charmers and
their families have spent the past three days living in open fields with just some
plastic sheets for shelter. Some of the 80 children in the group, which includes about
65 women and 50 snakes, are sick with fever, their mothers said. Barefoot children
played with cobras slithering out of their baskets, surrounded by paramilitary soldiers
with mortars and machine guns on the Indian side and troops with automatic rifles on
the Bangladeshi side. Indian officials often accuse Bangladesh's forces of helping
Bangladeshis illegally across the porous 4,000 km (2,500-mile) border with India.
This is denied by Dhaka. India reinforced its eastern border after Friday's incident at
Satgachi in West Bengal, some 700 km (435 miles) north of Calcutta, the capital of
the eastern Indian state. Relations between the neighbours have soured in recent
weeks after New Delhi ordered a crackdown on illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, who
are regarded by India as a security threat. India says more than 20 million
Bangladeshis are in the country illegally, many of them in West Bengal. Bangladesh
says all its nationals in mainly Hindu India are there legally.

Kinek készülnek az utazási prospektusok?
Tizennégy nyaralási prospektus hever előttem. Kínálnak mindent a bulgáriai

fogyókúrás nyaralástól a floridai szállodában üdülésig, ahol svájci virslit szolgálnak
fel hagymás reszelt krumplival. Az árak széles skálán mozognak: az Adriai-
tengernél például egy hétig tizedannyiért lehet nyaralni, mint a Bahamákon tíz
napig.
Van azonban valami, amit nem találok egyik prospektusban sem: egyetlen
embert, aki csak egy kicsit is hasonlítana rám, vagyis olyat, aki az egész telet a négy
fal között, munkával töltötte, fehér, mint a hó, továbbá az elfogyasztott söröktől és a
testmozgás hiányától pocakot eresztett. Egyetlen fényképen sem látok kopasz fejet.
Kizárólag napbarnított, csupa izom daliákat találok dús, erős, ősz szálaktól
tökéletesen mentes hajjal. Jó volna néha olyanokat is látni, akik épp csak
megérkeztek, tehát még nem sültek le. De nem, mind úgy festenek, mint akik az
elmúlt fél évet nyaralással töltötték. Tulajdonképpen jobban el tudnám viselni ennek
a bronzbarna Adonisz-seregnek a látványát, ha nem volnának ráadásul olyan
elképesztően sportosak. A fotókon vagy szörföznek, vagy két méter magasra
ugranak röplabdázás közben, vagy éppen visszaütik a fonákot a teniszpályán.
Ráadásul ezeken a felvételeken mindenki fiatal. Ha véletlenül találok egy
korombelit, a képaláírás tudatja velem, hogy az illető a legvénebb halász
Portugáliában, vagy Írország legidősebb polgára, aki még emlékszik Viktória
királynőre.
E prospektusok tanulmányozása közben már-már kisebbségi érzésem támad.
Beleképzelem magam az egyik ilyen fotó közepébe. Ott állok a bikinis szépségektől
és izompacsirtáktól körülvéve, vakító fehéren, orcám pedig vöröslik az erőfeszítéstől,
mert próbálom a hasamat behúzni.

BRITAIN
Kids behaving badly

At more than 150 schools across Britain, children spent the spring and summer rehearsing
their roles in a series of new plays commissioned by the National Theatre (NT). The groups
giving the best performances were then invited to London to repeat them for NT audiences.
There were, however, just two things that were controversial about the idea: the subject
matter and the strong language in the plays.
Things get pretty gruesome in Bryony Lavery's More Light, which is about a dead emperor
and his mistresses – they eat his body when they are buried alive in his tomb. Naomi
Wallace's The Sweat graphically describes experiences with homosexuality and promiscuity,
while other plays deal with urban violence and child abuse. That some of the performers were
only 11 years old worried some parents and teachers.
Jenny Harris, NT's director of education, told the Sunday Telegraph: "It is easy to take
things out of context and say they are shocking. You can do that with Shakespeare. But I saw
a production of More Light the other day that was very moving. Young people these days
watch Trainspotting day and night. They are part of the modern world. What kids are
interested in is tragedy and drama – drugs, family break-up, child abuse".
Arthur Pollard, a member of the Church of England's General Synod, disagrees: "Some of
these plays sound disgusting. They appear to have been written by people with sick minds.
There may be violence in Shakespeare, but this is subhuman".

Chubby Babies at Risk for Staying That Way

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Fat babies may be happy babies, but infants who put
on pounds too quickly are more likely to be overweight as adults.
Newborns who have bulked up by 4 months of age are twice as likely to tip the
scales 20 years later when compared to babies who gain weight more slowly. It is too
early to tell if a chubby infancy represents the start of a growing problem. But given
the clear-cut advantages of preventing obesity rather than fighting it later, good
habits are best instilled early on. This could be a critical time in the development of
obesity. Gaining weight rapidly at such a young age is associated with permanent
changes that may make it harder to regulate appetite and energy balance. Stettler’s
team followed several hundred African American children who were born in
Philadelphia around 1960. Obesity rates continue to soar for every age group and
race, but the risks of heart disease and other obesity-related problems are
particularly hard felt by minorities, especially African Americans.
Stettler took a fresh set of measurements and then compared them to what
the study participants weighed in the past. The now grown-up participants were
considered obese if they had a body mass index of 30 or greater, plus a substantial
amount of body fat. Body mass index is a measure of weight that takes height into
consideration. Infants who gained more than eight to 10 pounds in the first four
months of life doubled their chance for being obese by the time they turned 20 years
of age. In an editorial that accompanied the paper, Dr. Jack Yanovski argues that the
small study size makes it hard to draw firm conclusions. When Stettler's team
included stout 7 year olds in their analysis, for example, infant weight gain did not
appear to be a significant cause of adult obesity. But the results may ultimately help
us to identify children at unusual risk of adult obesity.
The participants in the study mostly grew up on baby formula, which has been
linked to faster weight gain compared with infants who are breast fed. If you breast
feed the child will stop when it's had enough, while a mother may overfeed with
formula. This may override the internal cue that causes individuals to overeat later in
life.

udvaroljon leendő feleségének, aki akkoriban az ottani konzervatóriumban tanult. Ám
nem merte megkérni a lány kezét. Szerencsére leendő anyósa igen határozott hölgy
volt, s habozás nélkül szóba hozta a dolgot Louise előtt. Így történt, hogy az Everest
meghódítója a háttérbe húzódott, míg Louise anyja hazulról, telefonon feltette
lányának a nagy kérdést.

Clearing the roads
The streets of London are rocking – or at least rolling – again. Last week the
traffic-clogged metropolis began demanding a Ł5 ($8) congestion charge from all
daytime motorists entering the busiest areas of the city. The result: a drop of nearly
25 percent in traffic.
The decongestant scheme employs some 700 cameras. Any driver who enters the
zone – a patch of around eight square miles – between 7 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. has
until 10 p.m. that same day to pay the charge. (You can pay by telephone, over the
Internet or in certain shops. Season passes are also available.) The cameras check
the registration plate of every car against the payment records, and failure to cough
up the cash lands one an Ł80 fine. The extra revenue from the charge and fines,
estimated at up to Ł150 million a year, will go toward the improvement of public
transport.
The idea is catching on. In Britain alone, at least 30 other towns and cities are
contemplating the tactic. Similar setups are already in operation in Singapore and
Norway. But although all flowed smoothly last week, questions remain. Will the
decrease in traffic hurt local businesses? Will traffic jams start up outside the zone?
For now, all that’s certain is that the 15,000-plus Londoners who’ve already been
fined will be the unhappiest new straphangers come Monday.

Hackers tried to steal hundreds of millions from bank, court told

An international gang plotted to steal £229 million from customers' accounts at a leading
bank by hacking into computers, a court was told yesterday.
A security supervisor smuggled two Belgian computer hackers into the London offices of
Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation by pretending that they were friends who had
arrived for a game of cards. The hackers installed spy software that recorded employees'
names and passwords at the bank's European headquarters in the heart of the City.
They visited the offices several times to retrieve the security information before returning
one weekend to transfer the money to accounts controlled by accomplices in Spain. When
Sumitomo Banking staff arrived at work on Monday morning, they found that their
computers had been tampered with, the jury was told.
The scheme was foiled because the hackers failed to fill in a field used to make money
transfers.

Ki is volt Darwin, és mi volt a Beagle szerepe?
Charles Darwin 1809-ben született az angliai Shrewsburyben. Apja, Robert Waring

Darwin korának egyik legsikeresebb orvosa volt. Édesanyja korán meghalt – Charles
mindössze nyolcéves volt ekkor –, s ettől fogva nővérei nevelték. Később Skócia
fővárosában, Edinburgh-ban orvosnak tanult, de nem bírta az operációk látványát, majd
apja kívánságára Cambridge-ben teológiai tanulmányokat folytatott.
Itt összebarátkozott J. S. Henslow-val, a botanikus pappal, akinek barátsága sorsdöntőnek

bizonyul. Darwin az egyetemen 1831-ben végzett; épp akkor indult Föld körüli útra a
Beagle nevű háromárbocos. Henslow beajánlotta Darwint a kapitánynak. Darwin
útravalóul Henslow-tól egy, A geológia alapjai1 című könyvet kapott, amelyet Charles
Lyell írt. A Principles of Geology tanulmányozására jutott elég ideje Darwinnak, hiszen a
hajó 1831. december 27-én futott ki, és az eredetileg tervezett két esztendő helyett útja – a
csendes-óceáni térség és Dél-Amerika térségeiben – öt évig tartott.
Darwin mint képzett és tapasztalt naturalista tért vissza Angliába. Már a hajón is
folyamatosan írt, munkáit pedig utazása alatt visszaküldte Angliába. Akkoriban komoly
eredményeknek tartották megfigyeléseit, s a tudományos lapok rendszeresen közölték
írásait.
A hosszú utazás alapvetően megváltozatta az addig léha életet élő Darwint. 1836. október
2-án hazatért, s immár 1839-ben tagja lett a Királyi Társaságnak2, vagyis a brit
akadémiának. Egy hét múlva pedig feleségül vette első unokatestvérét, Emma
Wedgwoodot.

Josephine Garis Cochran, Inventor of the "Automatic Dishwasher"
On an ordinary day in the 1880s, a woman from Illinois took a dirty bowl and plate and
made history. Josephine Garis Cochran was the first person to build a practical dish-
washing machine, succeeding where some had tried and failed.
Josephine Garis married a wealthy merchant and politician named William Cochran.
When she was 44, Josephine Cochran found that her fine china tableware was chipping.
It'd been in the family since the 17th century, and the servants were being careless with it.
So she took to washing her own dishes.
And it was the chore of washing dishes by hand and trying to save her good china from
breaking that caused her to proceed with an idea to invent a unique machine. She also
wanted to relieve tired housewives of the drudgery of dish washing.
She sat down with a cup in her hand, thinking. She measured the dishes first, then made
wire compartments, each designed to fit plates, cups or saucers. The cleaning trick would
be to rain down water on them.
After her husband’s death Josephine was left with a mere fifteen hundred dollars and
much more than that in debts. At that moment, everything changed. Josephine Cochran
became the developer and champion of a wholly new business. She started out in a shed
behind her house. Four years later, she was advertising the Garis-Cochran Dish-Washing
Machine Company in periodicals.
Cochran showed the dishwasher at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, but only restaurants
and hotels showed interest in it. After she died, the company changed hands and names
until in 1940 it became the Kitchen Aid part of the Whirlpool Corporation, but it wasn't
until many years after her death that the machine captured the attention of the average
housewife. The machine didn't gain popularity for home use until the 1950s.

SHOPPING AND EATING IN THE JEWELLERY QUARTER
Many people come to the Jewellery Quarter just to buy jewellery. With around 100 jewellery
shops to browse among, this could take some time, unless you know just what you want.
The shops in the Jewellery Quarter offer a traditional selection of favourite classics in various
price ranges – chains, bracelets, ear-rings, watches and silver gifts.
If you want something really different, there are a few studios offering more individual
designs, and there are also craftspeople in the Quarter happy to design and make something
just for you. If you want something repaired, you will be able to get it done here.
Shopping and walking are enough to give
anyone an appetite. In St. Paul’s Square
several of the 18th century houses have been
turned into bars and restaurants where you
can settle for a meal. Cheap and cheerful
sandwich bars and cafes dotted all over the
place.
On-street parking in the Jewellery Quarter is

scarce. Because many of the roads are very
narrow parking is often allowed only on one
side. They were built way before the motor
car, when jewellers lived on the spot or came
to work by horse from Handsworth. There is a
convenient multi-storey car park in Vyse
Street, opposite the cemetery.
