Historical Timeline

1600s

In the 1600s, in new England and most colonies, early child education started off inside
of the home. Family members were the main educators for the youth in this time period.
Eventually some women started to devote their time to being an educator and even going to the
extreme of changing their home into a school, these women were called Dames. What was called
an apprenticeship program was the basis of a child’s education. Boys as young as 7 years old
were sent to live with masters who would teach them a trade, while girls would usually learn
homemaking skills from their mothers. School in this era was not really a priority but more like a
second thought.
1619
 Ever since 1619 blacks as well as Native Americans were denied any type of educational
opportunity. Eventually, there were rare but some cases where religious groups created
special schools for children of color. This was mainly for boys, most girls after learning
the basics such as reading, and writing were then removed from school and started to
learn what they needed to know as a future mother and wife.
1636
 Harvard was built and was the first college in North America and was specifically made
to prepare ministers. Many people consider Boston Grammar school to be the start to
creating High schools in America. Schools curriculum in this time was based on
European roots.
1647
 This is the time where places started to take education of children very seriously,
especially Massachusetts. The law most commonly known as Old Deluder Satan Law
was made by the Puritans. This law required that every town of 50 households must
select and pay a teacher of reading and writing. While every town of 100 households
must appoint a Latin Grammar teacher to help prepare future university students.
1680
 Girls by this time would return home and learn the art for housekeeping for their future
roles as a wife and mother like I stated before. At this time boys that could afford to pay
for their education would go on to a Latin Grammar School. This is important because
it shows that only the wealthy got higher education.

1700s
By the 1700s Private teachers as well as night schools began to start functioning in
Philadelphia as well as New York. The first city in North America that showed evidence of
schools founded by Spanish settlers was in St. Augustine Florida. This is important because this
part of Florida is still highly made up of Spanish people. The 1700s was very important for the
advance in education as we have today. This was the time period that normal people could obtain
higher education and not just kids of wealth. This is important because this is was the basis for
public schools in todays age. The main reason behind this change was Thomas Jefferson who
was a very important man in the history of the United States.
1749
 Benjamin Franklin wrote “Proposals Relating to the Youth of Pennsylvania”. This
suggested that a new type of secondary education would be implemented and eventually
replace the Latin Grammar School. This is important because it took away these types of
schools and helped us get one step closer to the educational system we have today.
1751
 In this year the Franklin Academy was established, and this school provided the students
of freedom of religion. This is very important because it did not force students to learn
one specific religion and allowed them to be what they want. This led us to having
freedom of religion in today’s school systems.

1800s
With the commitment from Jefferson to educate all white Americans whether they were
poor and rich it really helped advance education in America. It was the start of when public
schools would be funded by the government. Without Jefferson this Country would be very
different with education was well as other things.
1822
 Native Americans made major achievements in education for their people. This allowed
the Cherokee language to be written and taught in schools. Many things were being
wrote and published in this language and it was a very huge advancement in the diversity
that this nation has today.
1824
 The government in this year started the BIA which stands for Bureau of Indian Affairs.
And started to put whole tribes of Native American people on reservations. From thyis
Indian boarding schools were established and put into use. This didn’t go well with the
Indian people because it was forcing European beliefs onto them. In this day most Indian
children were not taught with white children but now in todays age more than half of the
Native American children are taught in public schools.
1828
 The election of Jackson was very big for people in America regarding education.
Specifically, the poor to average white people were finally being heard and this was a
very important election.
1852
 This was the year that schools for girls were being used more and more and started to
become more of a standard for America. The name for the boy’s school had eventually
changed to Boys High School, which is very basic and straight forward. This was the
boom of secondary education in America. But these schools started to take the form of
private schools which required a student to pay for their education at these schools. The
start of free public schools really struggled for the fact that people did not want to pay a
school tax.
1874
 Another road block to free education was one of the early court cases for education, the
case was Kalamazoo, Michigan case. This case was ruled that it was unfair to have free
Elementary and College but not free education in the middle of those.

1900-1950s
1907
 Racism was still a big thing and it really showed in public schools, in this year there was
$5.02 spent on white children and only $1.10 spent on each black child. This was a big
problem because it caused riots and colored people to be very unhappy with how public
schools were treating the black children.
1919
 The Progressive Education Association was formed in this year. This group was
important because it eventually helped to show what the difference was between public
and private education.
1930s
 These were some of the hardest years for America because of the depression. This made
the government put more money and efforts into public education such as free food for
the poor and students who weren’t living their best life. This is very important because
we still have free lunch for students that are living under the poverty line.

1950-1999
1964
 President Johnson as well as Congress put an end segregation. This was one of the most
important events that has happened not only for schools but for all of America. It was the
start of people being able to interact with other races. But not everything was good as we
all know. It started a huge uproar in many parts of America.
1967-1973
 During these years white and black students started communicating with others. But even
though schools started to integrate the whites would still only be around whites and vice
versa. This is called Second Generation Segregation in these years the Supreme Court
started to take on de facto segregations in neighborhoods. This exposed the truth about
how neighborhoods that were mainly white were being better kept up then that of other
races.

2000s
2003
 Kerner started in the 60s with segregation, he said that our society was becoming two
different sides white and black. With this segregation issues still plagued us in the years
of the 200s. In 2003 the University of Michigan decisions that race was not the problem
in these incidents. The courts did say that race could be a factor in a student’s diversity,
and I would completely agree with that statement.
2007
 In a ruling in 2007, the Supreme Courts started to back away from desegregation acts by
eliminating plans in Seattle and Louisville. This had used race to assign students to
different public schools. This is very important because it still shows after years and
years of fighting against racism it is still in our life’s.
