LESSON PLAN: INTRODUCTION TO CONIC SECTIONS

Content: Analytic Geometry

Content Standard: The learners demonstrate an understanding of key concepts of conic sections and
systems of nonlinear equations.
Performance Standard: The learner shall be able to model situations appropriately and solve problems
accurately using conic sections and systems of nonlinear equations.

I. Learning Competency
At the end of the lesson, the learners must be able to illustrate the different types of conic
sections: parabola, ellipse, circle, and hyperbola. (STEM_PC11AG-Ia-1)

II. Subject Matter

A. Learning Resource
B. Strategy
Group Activity, PowerPoint Presentation, Lecture
C. Materials
Meta strips, Manila paper
D. Value Focus
Cooperation, Group dynamics

III. Learning Experiences

A. Activity
 The class will be divided into four groups.
 Each group will be given jumbled letters to form the words parabola, hyperbola, circle and
ellipse.
 The group will paste the formed letters in the meta strips.
 A PowerPoint presentation of some conic structures around the world will be utilized.
 Each group will identify the conic sections using the words they formed in the meta strips.
 A member of the group will explain their basis for identifying each conics.
B. Analysis
Guide Questions
 What were your thoughts while doing the activity?
 What did you feel while doing the activity?
 Based on the pictures you saw in the presentation, do you see yourself making/designing
one in the future?
C. Abstraction
 The teacher will facilitate the answers of the learners then he will present to the class a
video on Conic Sections.
Guide Questions
 How are conic sections formed?
 How will you differentiate a circle from an ellipse? How about a parabola from hyperbola?

D. Application
 Designing a Conic Village
Directions: Each group will design a conic village using at least 5 conic structures. Each
structure must be of different form than the others. The village will be drawn in a manila
paper and each group shall choose a representative to present their design.
Criteria:
10 pts – uses at least 5 different conic sections
6 pts – aesthetic Impact of the design
4 pts – neatness and time-bound
Total: 20 pts

IV. Evaluation
 A PowerPoint presentation of some conic structures around the world will be utilized.
 The learners will identify the picture shown if it represents a hyperbola, parabola, ellipse
or a circle?

V. Agreement
 List down 3 real life scenarios/applications/structures representing each of the conic
sections.
