FINNISH EDUCATION SYSTEM

A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO THE EDUCATION IN FINLAND

Finnish education system is based on trust, responsibility and joy of learning.

One of the basic principles is that everyone must have equal access to high-qual-
ity education and training. The concept of phenomenon-based learning, a move
towards inter-disciplinary topics is supported. Learning outside the classroom is
common - learning is not depending on time or place. There is a strong empha-
size on transversal competences such as thinking and learning-to-learn, cultural
competence, interaction and expression skills, managing daily life and taking
care of oneself, interaction and self-expression, multiliteracy and ICT compe-
tence, working life competence and entrepreneurship as well as participation,
involvement and building a sustainable future.

Teacher’s task is to instruct and guide students to become lifelong learners. The
pedagogical approach is in the student-centered interactive and inspiring learn-
ing sessions that enhance students’ creativity, critical thinking and participa-
tion. Students set goals, solve problems and assess their learning based on set
targets. Learning is an active, goal-oriented and self-motivated action.
THE ENGLISH SCHOOL OF HELSINKI
The English School is Helsinki based bilingual school that offers high quality hands-on
learning through student-centered discovery with an approach to develop students’
life-long learning skills. The English School is providing education from preschool to
high school. We are a close-knit community of students, teachers and families. At the
heart of our work is mutual respect and joy of learning. We strive for excellence and
foster a passion for learning and compassion for the world. Our students become
open, respectful and responsible global citizens, ready for the world. Our work is based
on respecting our school’s tradition of Christian values.
We are proud to say that we are amongst the best schools in Finland.

Our goals are to...

Awaken the life-long learner in everyone
Encourage you to see the potential of learning outside classrooms
Activate your inquisitiveness
Help you acknowledge the importance of socio-emotional skills

Learner’s point of view:

Understand what it means to own one’s own learning
Learn practical work skills to help with future learning
Find and appreciating your own strengths and understanding
how to develop character strengths
Open your view to learning not being tied down
to school surroundings

Teacher’s point of view:

Be introduced to pedagogical view that is based on empowering
the learners
Gain new practical insight in self-directed learnin
in school environments
Familiarize yourself with making learning goals more visible
Get examples of solving problems in education with
courageous thinking
Gain courage to look at education from a fresh viewpoint
-not re-inventing the wheel- but feeling empowered
to solve challenges instead of just stating them
Find ways to helping students to strengthen
their learning-to-learn skills
