The advantages of using a hydrogen as a cooling medium in generator are it have good heat
conductivity whereby it can absorb the heat produced by the generator efficiently, hydrogen gas
does not corrode metal parts, the generator would have low windage losses when hydrogen gas
is used as a cooling agent, hydrogen is a lightest gas available whereby it can be purged out from
the generator during emergency using carbon dioxide gas.

The disadvantages of using a hydrogen as a cooling medium in generator are an explosion can
occur if the purity of the hydrogen gas in the generator decreases to 75%, seal oil system is
needed to seal the hydrogen gas and sophisticated cooling system is needed to cool the
hydrogen gas through heat exchangers and seal drain enlargement and float trap will be
required to remove the hydrogen gas that seeps into the seal oil

purity of 100% is needed ideally for normal operation. If the purity decreases to 75%, then it
is considered combustible. Here, if the purity decreases it means that the hydrogen gas has
mixed with air and the mixture of hydrogen gas and air is combustible.

The generator cooling system is completely enclosed for operation with hydrogen gas as the
cooling medium. Four hydrogen gas coolers are mounted vertically within cooler supports rail
inside cooler tower located at the four corner of the generator frame. Each hydrogen cooler
section consists of a pair of water headers (water boxes), tube sheets, round tubes with plate
fins, all supported by frame. The gas to be cooled flows over the finned surface in a direction to
obtain counter flow between the gas and the water, that is the hot gas enters on the water
outlet pass and the cooled gas leaves from the water inlet pass. The ventilation for the gas
turbine generator consists of four coolers section, arranged symmetrically in the gas stream
within the gas tight generator casing. If the seal oil differential pressure decreases below 0.35
bars then carbon dioxide gas will be used to purge the hydrogen gas out from the generator.

75kV: The source is the Generator Step-Up transformer, GSUT. Power is exported from the
plant to the National Grid Line.

11.5kV: The source is the output of the generator. This supply is then fed to Station uxiliary
transformer, ST whereby voltage is stepped down from 11.5 kV to 6.6kV and the Unit uxiliary
Transformer, UT whereby voltage is stepped down from 11.5 kV to 415V,

6.6kV: The source is the Station uxiliary Transformer, ST and this transformer feeds the
cranking motors in the accessory compartment for turbine startup.
415V: The source is the Unit uxiliary Transformer, UT and this transformer feeds the PECC
and the Balance of the Plant to light on electrical component.

circuit breaker is an automatically operated electrical switch designed to protect an electrical
circuit from damage caused by overload or short circuit. Its basic function is to detect a fault
condition and, by interrupting continuity, to immediately discontinue electrical flow. Unlike
a fuse, which operates once and then has to be replaced, a circuit breaker can be reset (either
manually or automatically) to resume normal operation.
The Transmission grid of the power plant can be divided into main blocks which are block 1
which consists of the generators from the GT1 and GT meanwhile block consists of the
generators from the GT3 and GT4. If one of the blocks is on maintenance, the tie breakers will
interconnect both blocks to supply power to the cranking motors and the balance of the plant
components.

The unit auxiliaries are fed from the generator output when the gas turbine is in operation.
When it is not operating, the supply is imported from the National Grid Line.

The function of Black Start Diesel Generator is to produce output power (6.6kV) to the cranking
motors to start functioning during an occurrence of blackout. Once the cranking motors are
started, the main generator can start functioning.

The main purpose of Prelube pump running all a time is to ensure the lubrication oil in the BSDG
always circulates. It will ensure that the BSDG can start functioning at any time when it required
running. If the pump is switched off, the BSDG cannot be started immediately during an
existence of blackout.

In a total blackout condition, Black Start Diesel Generator will be started automatically if voltage
is below 6.6kV. The 5-DG breaker will be closed automatically. However, the 5-3 and 5-4
breakers in the ͚tie-breakers͛ have to be closed manually by the technicians. This would enable
the BSDG to restore power supply to the 6.6kV bus bar and in return this supply will be sent to
the PECCs, balance of plant components and to the cranking motors. Once the power supply is
restored, the following steps must be carried out:
i.Ê The protection devices on the 4 machines are checked to ensure that no flags are
present.
ii.Ê Gas turbines at unit & 3 are given preference to be black started since they have
station auxiliary transformers to supply 6.6kV to the respective bus bar. These gas
turbines must be kept running at full speed no load.
iii.Ê If the cause of the blackout is not from the switchyard, then PDP personnel will have to
notify NLDC that gas turbines are at FSNL and ready to restore power.
iv.Ê If NLDC have decided to restore power at PDP switchyard from elsewhere, then the PDP
machines should be synchronized as and when requested by NLDC in the normal
manner in droop governor mode.

If the BSDG is unable to start, then there will be no C power supply and the only power that
available is from the batteries, DC power. Besides that, there will be a loss of hydrogen gas due
to the failure in the seal oil system when the emergency seal oil pump that runs on DC supply
does not function due to low DC supply, overheating of bearings due to the failure in the seal oil
system when the emergency seal oil pump that runs on DC supply does not function due to low
DC supply and there will be a shutdown of Mark V control system due to low DC voltage,
