The Tree

Checking One’s Understanding

Answer the following questions:

1. What does a tree mean to a young boy?

When he was a boy, he thought that a tree was a beautiful creation that gave him
joy and bunch of fruit. It was the sign of his childhood.  And when he grew older, he still
thought that the tree was a beautiful thing that gives him happiness and supports his
needs.

2. What does the speaker in the poem do for a living? Why do you say so? Explain.

The speaker used the tree in making a bed or even a fence. He also used it to
support his family. 

3. What images are suggested by the speaker as he watches other boys climb the tree?

This poem is also pertaining to the joys of the children while playing in the tree.
“Those moments still remain every time a child sees the tree that becomes a part of their
lives.”

4. What is the tone of the poem? Is it Serious? Amusing? Angry? Humorous?


The tone of the poem is humorous.

5. Explain the symbolic meaning of the last two lines of the poem. Do these lines contain
the main theme of the poem?

Every little thing that happens in our childhood is somewhat memorable. It makes
us smile every time we reminisce to those memories. This poem is also pertaining to the
joys of the children while playing in the tree. Those moments still remain every time a
child see the tree that becomes a part of their lives.
