ABSTRACT

Metaphor is a major area of interest within the field of semantics. We have used
metaphor unconsciously in almost everything in our life. We are usually applied this when
try to compare unfamiliar concept into something that we know of. This study entitled
Metaphorical Expression Related to the Devil found in COCA. The aims of this study to
identify the types of metaphors and analyze the conceptual metaphors existed in the
metaphorical expression related to Devil found in COCA (The Corpus of Contemporary
American English).
This study uses COCA as a data source. 300 sentences of Devil associated with a
metaphorical expression are already investigated in this study. This study is a library
research which used qualitative data. The technique used in collecting data is note-taking
technique. The data was collected by using a qualitative method, analyzed by using MIP
(Metaphorical Identification Procedure by Pragglejaz Group (2007) and supported by
Steen (1999. 2009). This study applied the theory of conceptual metaphor proposed by
Kövecses (2010) to identify the types of Metaphor.
The metaphorical expressions about Devil in COCA covers the types of metaphor
including Structural, Ontological, and Orientational as well as their related types like
Personification. 146 metaphorical expression out of 300 sentences, 10 conceptual
metaphor for Structural Metaphor, 5 for Ontological Metaphor, 1 for Personification, 1 for
Orientational Metaphor and 154 Literal Meaning related to Devil are found in COCA. It
can be concluded that metaphor is indeed an important part of linguistic works.
