CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of Study

Metaphor is a major area of interest within the field of semantics. It is a

figurative speech that describes associate in nursing action or object in a very manner

that’s not taken, however, it helps make a case for ideas or build supports. Theory

from Lakoff and Johnson (1993:202) states that “Metaphorical expressions are

assumed to be mutually exclusive with the realm of ordinary everyday language:

everyday language had no metaphor”. Furthermore, metaphor is a device to

communicate, but for some people, it requires special talent to be able to do a

conscious and deliberate use of words of imagination and the rhetorical flourish.

However, Lakoff and Johnson (1980) introduced a modern theory of

metaphor which concerns the traditional of point of view from metaphor itself and the

underline metaphor is used in daily life activities of people. Besides, they found that

metaphors are not only found in language but also used in thoughts and actions.

Lakoff and Johnson (1980:3) stated that “Our ordinary conceptual system, in terms of

which we both think and act, is fundamentally metaphorical in nature”. In addition,

metaphor is used effortlessly and unconsciously by ordinary people, not merely by

special talented people (Lakoff and Johnson, 1980 in Kövecses, 2002: viii). In the

end, Lakoff and Johnson note that the conceptual metaphor is a fundamental feature

of conducting metaphorical expression.
