2 SR03-01Mk2 Introduction
Scandinavian Micro Systems provides a range of Converter Units, Heading Repeaters and other
Navigation Instruments and interface units; please contact us or visit: www.scansys.no or
www.ScanRepeater.com.

The SR03-01Mk2 will interface between your new gyrocompass and your
existing Mechanical Repeater(s) systems, saving time and money
when you need to replace your old gyrocompass.

With SR03-01Mk2 there is no need to buy new repeaters and it is not

necessary to reconfigure or replace your ARPA Radars, Autopilots, etc.

In addition you will save time and money on installation and cabling.

SR03-01Mk2 is a UNIVERSAL NMEA to Step/Synchro Converter & Drive Unit, and is an upgraded
and improved version of SR03-01(Mk1) and includes the following features:

 SR03-01Mk2 can be set up and programmed using the Front Panel Menu system, making
the unit totally flexible for any Gyro Exchange job.

 SR03-01Mk2 connects to 24V DC Mains Power and generates all required Step & Synchro
signals internally.

 SR03-01Mk2 converts NMEA HEADING data to Synchro signals and drives up to 12

Mechanical Synchro Repeaters.

 SR03-01Mk2 converts NMEA HEADING data to Step-by-Step signals and drives up to 12

Mechanical 6 step per degree Mechanical Step Repeaters.

 SR03-01Mk2 converts NMEA HEADING data to 2-phase Step signals, driving up to 12

“Micro-Step” Repeaters.

 SR03-01Mk2 includes an approved HEADING MONITOR & ALARM function. The unit
monitors Heading input No. 1 and Heading input No. 2, and generates an Alarm if the
difference exceeds a pre-set value.

 Two SR03-01Mk2 units can be phase-synchronized with each other, taking the reference
signal from one unit and feeding it to the other. This is typically used when it is required
to drive a 1X/36X Synchro System.

 SR03-01Mk2 can even be used for driving Mechanical Speed Display Units;
for instance -10 to + 90 knots.

2.2 Heading Monitoring
SR03-01Mk2 includes an approved HEADING MONITOR & ALARM function. The unit monitors
Heading input No. 1 and Heading input No. 2, and generates an Alarm if the difference exceeds a
pre-set Alarm Limit.

This Alarm Limit is set to 5.0 degrees by default, but the limit can be adjusted by the user from
1.0 degree up to 20.0 degrees.

Example: Assume that HEADING 1 is used as the Primary Input and the Difference exceeds the
Pre-set Limit; a Compass Compare Alarm will be generated and the user will have the option to
change the Primary Input to HEADING 2.

This requires a Manual Confirmation of the Alarm and a Manual Switch-Over at the SR03-01Mk2
Front Panel or at the SR03-03 Remote Control Unit.

Therefore when using the Heading Monitoring function, it is highly recommended to install the
SR03-03 Remote Control Unit in the Bridge Consol. See section 2.3 below.

2.3 Remote Control Unit; SR03-03

An Optional Remote Control Unit is available. Model No.: SR03-03. For more details, see
separate Data Sheet on SR03-03.

The SR03-03 would typically be mounted in the Bridge Consol allowing alarms and operational
issues to be resolved from the Bridge.

This is especially useful and might be required if the SR03-01Mk2 is used to monitor two
compasses. See System Diagram suggestions in Figure 3 and 4

The Remote Control Unit is basically a copy of the

Main Control Panel on the SR03-01Mk2 itself.

However, the Configuration Menu is not available

on the SR03-03. Set up and configuration changes
must be done on the SR03-01Mk2 unit itself – it
can not be done from the remote device.

Bridge Figure 5: SR03-03 Remote Control Unit

NOTE: SR03-03 and SR03-01Mk2 require the same software version.

2.4 Alarm Functions

The SR03-01MK2 is “short-circuit” protected and has built in automatic “shut-down,” in case of
critical alarm situations.

Critical alarms include Loss of Power Input, Load Over-Current, High Temperature and Loss of
Phase Output signals. For a closer description of all the alarm system in SR03-01MK2, please see
Chapter 6.5 Alarm System Description, page 60.

An Alarm will start flashing the Red Alarm light on the Front Panel, drop the Alarm Output Relay
and start the Sound Alert Alarm.

To silence the Alarm; Press the Red Alarm Button, this will cancel the Sound Alarm, but the Red
Light will continue Flashing until the Alarm situation is fixed.

If a SR03-03 Remote Control Unit is installed on the Bridge, the same functions can be performed
from there. Also, instead of using the SR03-03, you can acknowledge the alarms from a Central
Alarm Monitor System using the NMEA Alarm connection (see section 5.7.4 below.)

2.5 OPTION: Phase-Synchronizing two SR03-01Mk2 units
Two SR03-01Mk2 units can be phase-synchronized with each other, taking the reference signal
from one unit and feeding it to the other.

This will give you two sets of Synchro Signals that are Phase-Locked to each other, using one
common Reference Signal. Typically used when it is required to drive a 1X/36X Synchro System.

2.6 Speed Indicators

Many Navy ships still use Mechanical Speed Indicators, equipped with a Synchro Receiver.
SR03-01Mk2 can be programmed to drive many such speed indicators. SR03-01Mk2 is pre-
programmed for Driving Speed Indicators with 400Hz 110V Ref, 0-90V Phase signals and Speed
Scale of from -10 knots to + 90 knots.

Please contact SCANDINAVIAN MICRO SYSTEMS for other options.

Condition is rectified, at which time the red light will be turned off.

3.3 Alarm Mode

An Alarm Condition will always be indicated with flashing the Red Alarm button and an Audible
Alarm. In addition there will be an alarm message text in the Main Display.

Acknowledge:
An alarm must always be acknowledged, even if the alarm situation disappears. This can be done
from the Main Operator Panel on the SR03-01Mk2, on a SR03-03 Remote Control Unit (if
installed) or from the ship’s Centralized Alarm Monitoring system (CAM).

ALARM
To acknowledge an Alarm on SR03-01Mk2 or on the SR03-03 – press the Red Flashing
RESET Alarm Button.

The Alarm System consists of three Alarm Levels (types).

 Warning: A warning means that some SR03-01Mk2 operational parameter is close to the
allowed limit, but there is not yet an actual Alarm situation (a typical situation can be that
the temperature in the unit is very high, but not yet so high that the unit must be turned
off). The Red Alarm Button will be flashing and an Alarm text will be flashing in the
Display. However, there will be NO Audible Alarm and the Alarm Output-Relay will NOT be
activated.

 Alarm: An error situation that must be corrected, but is NOT critical to the physical
operation of SR03-01Mk2 unit. (A typical situation could be the loss of the NMEA input
signal from the Gyro – this must obviously be corrected immediately for safe ship
operation, but it is not critical for the physical operation of the SR03-01Mk2 unit itself).
The Red Alarm Button will be flashing and an Alarm text will be flashing in the Display.
There will be an Audible Alarm and the Alarm Output-Relay will be activated.

 Critical Alarm: This is an error situation that must be corrected and where the SR03-
01Mk2 might be permanently damaged if the situation is allowed to continue. Therefore
the SR03-01Mk2 will be turned off to prevent it from being permanently damaged. The
Red Alarm Button will be flashing and an Alarm text will flash in the Display. There will be
an Audible Alarm and the Alarm Output-Relay will activate. In addition, the SR03-01Mk2
output will be shut OFF.

(For a detailed description of the Alarm System see section 6.5 below.)

3.4 Front Panel Menu Description

The table below describes the main menu and how to navigate it.

5.6 POWER INPUT: 24V DC

SR03-01Mk2 is powered by 24V DC and it will operate normally if the input voltage is between 20
and 32 Volt. If the 24V DC signal exceeds 32 Volt – the “Mains Circuit Breaker” will trip and shut
the unit off.

Power is intended to be taken from the Ship’s battery system and the SR03-01Mk2 will normally
draw between 5 and 16 Amps depending on load. A power source able to supply 24V 16 Amps is
recommended. See technical Specification for more details.

The main DC Power Circuit Breaker and Trip Relay are shown below. Please make sure you
connect with the correct polarity.

5.7.7 PHASE-Lock to External Synchro Ref. (P6)

You can Phase-Synchronize the Synchro Signal Outputs of two SR03-01Mk2 units
by feeding the reference signal from one unit to the External Ref Terminal (P6). It
is also possible to use an external reference signal as input to both SR03-01Mk2
units.

This will give you two set of Synchro Signals that are Phase-Locked to each other, using one
common Reference Signal. This is typically used when it is required to drive a 1X/36X Synchro
System, see system diagram in section 2.5 above.

NOTE: You need to use the Custom Synchro/Step Menu to configure SR03-01Mk2 for External
Reference.

5.7.8 RS422 Serial Data LINE TERMINATION

If the Serial data Cable is very long AND you are using High Speed NMEA signals - it might be required to
terminate the RS422 physical line to maintain a good quality RS422 data signal. SR03-01Mk2 v200 has a
provision for this.

If more than one receiver is on the same line; Line Termination Must be done ONLY at the Last
Receiver - at the end of the cable.

NOTE: Default Factory Setting is “NO Line Termination”

5.7.9 Configured for Single-Ended Operation (RS232 compatible)

On older equipment the Serial Data signals are NOT always proper RS422: Therefore we have
provided an OPTION for interfacing to s called single ended drivers. This can be accomplished
with changing the Jumper-Setting for each of the Serial Ports on P2, P3 & P4.

NOTE: Default Factory Setting is “NMEA RS422” (normal differential RS422 signal).
The Jumpers Terminals are: E1 (for P1), E3 (for P2) and E5 & E7 (for P3).

The figures below illustrate the different type of serial data transmitters SR03-01Mk2 can
interface with. If your Gyro Heading Transmitter has a Single Ended Transmitter, you will need to
move Jumper E3 and/or E5 associated with Heading 1 and Heading 2 Input - as show below.

5.8 STEP/SYNCHRO Terminal Block (P0)

CAUTION: Make sure you PROGRAM (SET-UP) SR03-01Mk2 Output Voltages and
Frequencies BEFORE you connect the Mechanical Repeaters. SR03-01Mk2 can damage
the Repeater Motors if the Voltage is too high – or if the Frequency is wrong.

Follow the instruction in sections 5.9 and 5.10 below before you physically connect the
Mechanical Repeater.

Inside the SR03-01Mk2 you will find the STEP/SYNCHRO Terminal for connecting:

Synchro (R1 & R2, S1, S2, S3),

Step (6 step per degree) (R+ or R-, S1, S2, S3) or..
Anschütz Micro-Step ( S1, S2 & N= S3).

The Lamp Drive is a separate 24V DC voltage for providing current to the lamps inside the various
Mechanical Repeaters. For Synchro Repeaters this is required only for Yokogawa type Repeaters.

Figure 19: Main Output Terminal Block

5.8.1 Connect SYNCHRO Output

CAUTION: BEFORE you connect the Mechanical Repeaters; make sure you have
programmed SR03-01Mk2 for the CORRECT Synchro Output Voltages and Frequencies.
If they are wrong it could damage the Mechanical Repeaters motors.

Connect the Mechanical Synchro Repeaters to; R1, R2 (Reference signal) and S1, S2, S3 (Phase
signals). Follow the guidelines in section 5.9 below in order to program (Set-Up) the Synchro
Output for the correct Voltages and Frequencies.

5.8.2 Connect STEP Output (6 steps per degree)

SR03-01Mk2 User Manual
CAUTION: BEFORE you connect the Mechanical Repeaters; make sure you have
programmed SR03-01Mk2 for the CORRECT Step-by-Step Output Voltages. If they are
wrong it could damage the Mechanical Repeaters motors.

Connect the Mechanical Step-by-Step Repeaters to; R+ (for Positive reference) or R- (for
Negative Reference), then connect S1, S2, S3 (Phase signals).

Follow the guidelines in section 5.10 below in order to program (Set-Up) the 6 steps per degree
output for the correct voltages.

Please note that most Step systems are connected for Positive Ref. (R+). However, it will not
matter to SR03-01Mk2 if you connect the Mechanical Repeaters as Positive Step or Negative
Step.

5.8.3 Connect MICRO-STEP Output

CAUTION: BEFORE you connect the Mechanical Repeaters; make sure you have
programmed SR03-01Mk2 for the CORRECT Micro-Step Output Voltage. If they are
wrong it could damage the Mechanical Repeaters motors.

Connect the Mechanical Anchütz Micro-Step using S3 as “N” Neutral. Then connect the two
Phases to S1 and S2.

Follow the guidelines in section 5.10 below in order to program (Set-Up) the Anschütz Micro Step
correctly.

5.8.4 Connect LAMP Drive Output

The Lamp Drive is a separate 24V DC voltage for providing current to the lamps inside the various
Mechanical Repeaters. For Synchro Repeaters this is required only for Yokogawa type repeaters
where an extra wire is required in addition to R1 ( Reference Line #1). In this case connect L- to
R1 and connect L+ to each Repeater Lamp feed.

5.9 SYNCHRO OUTPUT SET-UP

CAUTION: DISCONNECT the Mechanical Synchro Repeaters BEFORE starting Set-Up.

SR03-01 can damage the repeater motors if the wrong frequency and voltages are
applied to them.

5.9.1 Determine Mechanical Synchro Repeater Type

To configure SR03-01Mk2 correctly you MUST KNOW the following information about the
Existing Mechanical Repeater;
Frequency, Reference Voltage, Phase Voltages and Gear Ratio ( 1X, 36X, 90X, 360X etc)
This information is normally available on the Mechanical Repeaters Name Plate or the Synchro
Motors “Name Plate”. Look inside the Mechanical Repeaters if it not on the outside.
Frequency Ref Voltage (rms) Phase Voltages (rms) Gear Ratio
(Hz) ( R1-R2) (S1-S2, S2-S3, S3-S1)

In the SET-UP MENU we have attempted to associate the various gyrocompass models with their
respective Synchro and Step Transmission Voltages & Frequency combinations and you can select
“Gyrocompass model” from the menu.

Other models and repeater motors could be installed; therefore please verify Frequency,
Reference Voltage and Phase Voltages before Configuring SR03-01Mk2.

SR03-01Mk2 User Manual
CAUTION: BEFORE you connect the Mechanical Repeaters; make sure you have
programmed SR03-01Mk2 for the CORRECT Synchro Output Voltage. If they are wrong
it could damage the Mechanical Repeaters motors.

Explanation: The Mechanical Repeater motor is basically a rotating transformer, therefore the
Reference voltage R1/R2 will be transformed back to Phase signals MRS1/MRS2/MRS3, sending
energy back to the SR03-01Mk2. The returned phase voltages might be higher than those
generated by the SR03-01Mk2 and the unit must then “sink” the returned power. This will
generate more heat inside the SR03-01Mk2, and it should be avoided if possible.

SR03-01Mk2 should be set up to generate equal phase voltage (S1-S2, S2-S3, S3-S1) to those
generated by the Mechanical Repeater (MRS1-MRS2, MRS2-MRS3, MRS3-MRS1).

 Disconnect all repeater(s) from SR03-01Mk2.

 Use the “Synchro Customize” menu to setup SR03-01Mk2 with the correct Mechanical
Repeater reference Voltage and Frequency - R1/R2 and apply the Reference Voltage to
the Mechanical Repeater. See section 5.9.4 below
 Do not worry about the Phase voltage setting at this moment.
 Connect ONLY the Reference signals R1/R2 from SR03-01Mk2 to only ONE mechanical
repeater – let the mechanical repeater phase signals S1/S2/S3 be disconnected.
 Turn the repeater manually around. Then measure and find the maximum RMS AC
Voltage between MRS1/MRS3. This maximum RMS voltage is then the “correct phase
voltage”.

5.9.5 CONNECT the Synchro Output

BEFORE you connect the Mechanical Synchro Repeaters wires to the SR03-01Mk2, you
must “POWER DOWN” the OUTPUT as follows:

POWER

 Press and HOLD the key for 5 seconds.

 This will “fade out” the Synchro signals, lowering the Ref and Phase voltages to “0.”

 This is an alarm situation. The display will indicate “Synch/Step POWERED off” and
Alarm will go ON.
ALARM

 Press the RESET

key to mute the buzzer.

 Connect the mechanical repeaters cables R1, R2, S1, S2 & S3 to the MAIN OUTPUT
Terminal Block. See sections 5.2 and 5.3 above. and then follow the instructions in
section 5.9.6 below

5.9.6 POWER-UP the Synchro Output

Power Up the Synchro Output as follows:
POWER
Press and HOLD the button for 1 second.
This will “fade in” (Soft-Start) the Synchro Signals to full amplitude.

This will cancel the Alarm situation and the “Synch/Step POWERED off” text will disappear.
SR03-01Mk2 should now be in Normal Operation Mode delivering Power to the Mechanical
Repeaters. You should notice that the current consumption has increased (see section 3.1 above.)

When Connecting Old Mechanical Repeaters they could be faulty and even “stuck”.
Please check that they all turn easily. If a Mechanical Repeater is “stuck” it might draw
5-10 times more power than a normal, working repeater. In this case you will get a
Stuck Repeater Alarm. See section 5.9.7 below

When using Synchro Output to drive Mechanical Synchro repeaters; SR03-01Mk2 has a built in
“Stuck Repeater” warning.

If the Load on SR03-01Mk2 show a large variation when the Repeaters are Turning, it is most
likely caused by one or more of the repeaters having a mechanical malfunction.

When this Delta Load (variation) exceeds a Pre-Set Limit – a Stuck Repeater Warning is
generated.

5.10 STEP OUTPUT SET-UP

CAUTION: BEFORE you connect the Mechanical Repeaters, make sure you have
programmed SR03-01Mk2 for the CORRECT Step-by-Step output voltages. If they are
wrong it could damage the Mechanical Repeaters motors.

5.10.1 Determine Mechanical Step Repeater Type

To configure SR03-01Mk2 correctly for a Step-by-Step system you MUST KNOW if you have
Standard 3-phase system for 6 steps per degree (Reference and S1, S2, S3) or a 2-phase Micro
Step type system (S1, S2 and “N”).
For MicroStep systems go to section 5.11 below.
If you have a Standard 3-phase Step-by-Step system for 6 steps per degree: Then you MUST
DETERMINE if these repeaters are for 24, 35, 50 or 70 V DC drive.
Please Note:
In the SR03-01Mk2 menu system the Standard 3-phase Step-by-Step system for 6 steps per
degree is referred to as “Step (6)”. Please make sure you make the correct menu selection.
Positive or Negative Reference (R+ or R-):
You can connect the SR03-01Mk2 for Positive Reference or for Negative Reference.

For the Mechanical Repeaters or for the SR03-01Mk2, it will not matter if you connect the system
for R+ or R-, but it MIGHT MATTER for other electronic inputs such as on Radar, Sat. Nav., etc.

6.2 Synchro Signal Operation
You will find the technical specification for the Synchro output in chapter 7 Technical
Specifications.

To control a Synchro motor you need three phase signals S1, S2 and S3 and two reference
signals R1 and R2.

Definitions of the Synchro signals are:

R1 to R2 = KE sin ωt

S1 to S3 = E sin ωt sin (θ)

S3 to S2 = E sin ωt sin (θ + 1200)
S2 to S1 = E sin ωt sin (θ + 2400)

Figure 21: Illustration of Synchro signals

6.2.1 Automatic Output Shutdown

The Synchro signal will be faded out and disconnected if one or more of the three critical alarms
occur (see the table below.)

Critical Alarm source Comments

Overloaded SR03-01Mk2 draws more current than the maximum Current
Limit.
Critical Temperature Internal temperature exceeds the maximum limit (70 ºC).
Step/Synchro Power Off It is possible to “Power off” the Step/Synchro signal with the
[POWER] button pressed for 5 seconds on Local Control Panel.

6.2.2 POWER OUTPUT Off; Synchro Disconnected State (Alarm active)

When a critical alarm becomes active the Synchro output will be disconnected in the following
way:
 The Synchro output signal will be faded to 0 volts.
 The Change-Over Relay will de-energize.
(The NC contact will close and the NO contact will open).
 The Alarm Relay will de-energize.
(The NC contact will close and the NO contact will open).
 The Alarm Light will start flashing red.
 The Alarm Sounder will start pulsating with 1 Hz.

SR03-01Mk2 User Manual
6.2.3 Synchro Output Soft Start
If the critical alarm conditions are removed the Synchro output will follow a soft start algorithm
as follows:

 The Sound Alarm will shut off.

 The Alarm Light will stop flashing red.
 The Alarm Relay will activate.
 The Change-Over Relay will activate.
 The Synchro Output signals will fade-in to full amplitude. This will take 2.2 seconds.

6.2.4 AUTOMATIC Heading Recovery Function

If for some reason SR03-01Mk2 shuts down (looses power or otherwise shuts down), the Output
Heading will be stored in Non Volatile Memory before shutting down the system.

When SR03-01Mk2 restarts, the stored heading (recovered heading RH) will be used to
automatically align the Mechanical Repeater with Gyrocompass Heading.

Please Note:
If SR03-01Mk2 shuts down when the mechanical repeaters are turning at very high Rate of Turn
(ROT), the mechanical repeaters might not stop immediately. This could cause misalignment
during automatic recovery.

It is very unlikely that this will happen but if it does, just re-align the SR03-01Mk2 once more.

6.2.5 Output Overload Protection

SR03-01Mk2 has built-in Hardware Short-Circuit protection on each Output.

In addition; SR03-01Mk2 measures the average current drawn from the 24 V power and triggers
the Overload Alarm if the average Current Exceeds a Pre-Set limit. This pre-set Current Limit can
be edited.

The Overload Alarm will turn off the Output Voltage and after 10 seconds it will try to re-connect
the Output Voltage automatically by performing a “soft start”.

CAUTION: If the Automatic Re-Start is attempted successively 10 times, the fault is

considered “permanent” and the SR03-01Mk2 will NOT attempt to re-connect the Output
Voltage. The system needs maintenance.

If, however, the Output Voltage is automatically re-connected as described above, and remains
connected without exceeding the Current Limit for more than 60 seconds, it is assumed that the
overload situation was temporary. In this case the Overload Alarm will be re-set and operation
will continue as normal.

6.2.6 Stuck Repeater Warning

SR03-01Mk2 has a built in load test that will detect when a Mechanical SYNCHRO Repeater is
stuck and give a Warning as follows: The Red Alarm LED will start flashing and the “Stuck
Repeater” text will flash on the display. (see section 5.9.7 above for more information).

The Stuck Repeater Warning will not trigger the Alarm Output Relay or the Sound Alarm.
If the stuck repeater is removed (or repaired) the Stuck Repeater Warning is also removed.

6.2.7 Stuck Repeater fault Determination

SR03-01Mk2 will sense the abnormal/unequal load when a Mechanical Repeater is rotating. The
Rate of Turn needs to be between 0 and 60 degrees per minute and the Synchro Motor must
rotate one full turn. “Stuck Repeater” will not be detected if the Heading is not changing.

6.3 Step-by-Step Signal Operation
You will find the technical specification for the Step output in chapter 7 Technical Specifications.

SR03-01Mk2 can handle two types of stepper motors.

 Standard step 1/6 [step/degree]
o 3 signals or step/phase.
o 1 signal for positive or negative reference.

NOTE:
When connecting a MicroStep Repeater to SR03-01Mk2, connect “N” to S3 (= MicroStep
Reference signal).

A Micro Step system uses a normal 2-phase Step Motor,

and adds small “micro steps” to make a smoother rotation.

The Anschütz MicroStep (as illustrated below) has zero-

crossing steps per degree with a total of 192 micro steps
per degree.

6.3.7 Step Output Overload

SR03-01Mk2 has built-in Hardware Short-Circuit protection on each Step Output Signal.

In addition, the SR03-01Mk2 measures the average current drawn from the 24 V power and
triggers the Overload Alarm if the average current exceeds the pre-set limit. This pre-set Current
Limit can be edited.

The Overload Alarm will turn off the output voltage and after 10 seconds it will automatically try
to re-connect the output voltage, by initiating a “soft start”.

CAUTION: If the Automatic Re-Start is attempted unsuccessfully 10 times, the fault is

considered “permanent” and the SR03-01Mk2 will NOT attempt to reconnect the Step
Output Signals. The system needs maintenance.

If, however, the Step Output Voltage is automatically re-connected as described above, and
remains connected without exceeding the Current Limit for more than 60 seconds, it is assumed
that the overload situation was temporary. In this case the Overload Alarm will be re-set and
operation will continue as normal.

6.4 Lamp Output Voltage

SR03-01Mk2 has available a separate 24V DC Lamp Output Voltage for those applications that
require it for light in the Mechanical Repeaters.
(For example: The Yokogawa Mechanical Repeaters require R1 plus an extra lamp voltage wire.)

6.5 Alarm System Description

An Alarm Condition will always be indicated with flashing of the Red Alarm button and by a Sound
Alarm. In addition there will be alarm message text in the Front Panel Display.

SR03-01Mk2 has three different alarm levels: Warning, Alarm and Critical Alarms.

6.5.1 Alarm Acknowledge

If the Red Alarm LED is blinking it indicates that there are one or more alarms.

To acknowledge an Alarm on SR03-01Mk2 or SR03-03, press the Red Flashing Alarm

Button.

Please note:
Even if the alarm situation disappears by itself, it is required to acknowledge the alarm.

Acknowledging an alarm can be done from the Main Operator Panel on the SR03-01Mk2 , from
the SR03-03 Remote Control Unit (if installed) or from the ship’s Centralized Alarm Monitoring
system (CAM) ( see section 6.5.9 NMEA Alarm Output. )

6.5.2 Warning
A warning means that some SR03-01Mk2 operational parameter is close to the allowed limit, but
there is not yet an actual Alarm situation (a typical situation can be that the temperature in the
unit is very high, but not yet so high that the units must be turned off). The Red Alarm Button
will be flashing and an Alarm text will be flashing in the Display. However, there will be no Sound
Alarm and the Alarm Output-Relay will NOT be activated.

When a “warning” occurs the following will be executed:

=> Send a NMEA ALR sentence.
SR03-01Mk2 (v2.00) UserManual Rev1.21.doc - Page 60 of 81 - Scandinavian Micro Systems AS
SR03-01Mk2 User Manual
=> Blink a message in the LCD display.
=> Blink the Red Alarm LED.

There will be NO Sound Alert for a “Warning”.

6.5.3 Alarm
An Alarm represents an error situation that could affect the safe operation of the ship and it
MUST BE CORRECTED. However an “Alarm” is NOT critical to the physical operation of SR03-
01Mk2 unit.

A typical situation could be the loss of the NMEA input signal from the Gyrocompass; this must
obviously be corrected immediately to maintain safe operation of the ship, but it is not critical for
the physical operation of the SR03-01Mk2 unit itself.

The Red Alarm Button will be flashing and an Alarm text will be flashing in the Display.
There will be a Sound Alarm and the Alarm Output-Relay will be activated.

When an “alarm” occurs the following will be executed:

=> Send a NMEA ALR sentence.
=> Blink a message in the LCD display.
=> Blink the Red Alarm LED.
=> The Sound Alarm “buzzer” will be activated.
=> Alarm Relay On.

6.5.4 Critical Alarm

A Critical Alarm represents an error situation that could permanently damage the SR03-01Mk2
if the situation is allowed to continue. Therefore the SR03-01Mk2 step output will automatically
turn off. This could affect the safe operation of the ship and it MUST BE CORRECTED.

The Red Alarm Button will be flashing and an Alarm text will be flashing in the Display. There
WILL be an Audible Alarm and the Alarm Output-Relay will be activated. When a “critical alarm”
occurs the following will be executed:

=> Send a NMEA ALR sentence.

=> Blink a message in the LCD display.
=> Blink the Red Alarm LED.
=> The Sound Alarm “buzzer” will be activated.
=> Alarm Relay On.
=> Disconnect Step/Synchro Output.

6.5.8 RELAY Alarm Output

SR03-01Mk2 has a Relay Alarm Output: a Normally Open (NO) and a Normally Closed (NC)
contact is available and rated for 1.0 Amp at 30 VDC, 0.3 Amp 110 VDC, 0.5 Amp 125 VAC.

6.5.9 NMEA Alarm Output

SR03-01Mk2 can send an alarm via NMEA to our Remote Control Unit (SR03-03) or to a
Centralized Alarm Monitoring (CAM) system.

The NMEA Alarm communication transmits a sentence containing an “ALR” (Alarm), and expects
to receive a sentence containing an “ACK” (Acknowledge).

each alarm must be acknowledged separately.

As long as there are any unacknowledged alarms, the Red Alarm LED will remain flashing. The
Red Alarm LED will stop flashing as soon as all alarms are acknowledged and it will then go to a
steady Red Light ON.

The steady Red Alarm Light will then remain ON until all alarms are repaired (or fixed).

6.8 RECOVERY after Power Down

Should power fail or SR03-01Mk2 is turned OFF, the actual Output Heading used by SR03-01Mk2
is stored in non-volatile memory and used when SR03-01Mk2 is Powered-Up Again.

When Power-Up again, SR03-01Mk2 will attempt to read the current Gyrocompass Heading from
Heading Input #1. If it does not find valid data on Heading #1 it will attempt Heading Input #2.

SR03-01Mk2 (v2.00) UserManual Rev1.21.doc - Page 65 of 81 - Scandinavian Micro Systems AS

SR03-01Mk2 User Manual
When SR03-01Mk2 has valid data it will use this Heading and compare it to the stored Heading,
compute the difference and AUTOMATICALLY Aligning the Mechanical Repeaters to current
Heading input.

Please NOTE:
If the ship was turning very fast at the time SR03-01Mk2 was shut OFF (i.e. the Mechanical
Repeaters were rotating with a high ROT), then it is possible that the Mechanical Repeaters did
not stop immediately and the there could be a discrepancy between the stored Heading data and
the actual Heading of the Mechanical Repeaters.

The Mechanical Repeaters may be misaligned: Please Check Alignment.

7.7.2 NMEA PPLAN-interpreter

The PPLAN is a proprietary sentence used by Sperry to identify the Heading source:
$PPLAN,,,,,,,,a*hh<CR><LF>

“a” is the Heading reference status indicator.

With a=1: The Source is Gyro 1
With a=2: The Source is Gyro 2
With a=3: The Source is Magnetic

--HDT Not valid Not valid True and Magnetic
--HDG 2 Not valid Magnetic Heading
--HDM 3(Lowest) Not valid Magnetic Heading

If the PPLAN sentence disappears for more than 10 seconds the NMEA PPLAN interpreter will not
decode any NMEA heading sentences.

7.7.3 NMEA HEADING data Input Priority

The NMEA sentence received on the “Primary Input” will always be used to generate the
Step/Synchro output signal (Default Primary Input is Heading Input #1). Heading data received
on the other input will be discarded. You can change Primary Input to be Heading Input # 2.

7.7.4 NMEA HEADING data Update Speed

The NMEA Heading Update Rate must be 1 second or higher for the SR03-01Mk2 to operate
properly. If the Heading Data appears less frequently, the data will be read, but the Mechanical
Repeaters might not rotate smoothly.

7.7.5 Baud Rate

Baud Rate can be selected from the menu as: 4800, 9600, 19200 or 38400 b/sec.

7.8 Step/Synchro Output Signals

7.8.1 Synchro Signal Resolution & Accuracy

The SR03-01Mk2 has 16-bit internal resolution. The Synchro output signals have 12-bit angular
resolution and a sampling rate of 1 kHz for the Digital to Analog (DA) converters.

For 1X (1:1) Synchro signals this results in an absolute “static accuracy” of better than ±0.4
degrees (typically better than ±0.2 degrees) and better than ±0.01 degrees for 360X.

7.8.2 Rate of Turn (ROT)

The unit will drive the Step/Synchro Mechanical Repeaters with a maximum Rate of Turn (ROT) of
up to 1200 degrees per minute (20 degrees per second) independent of gear ratio and reference
frequency.

7.8.3 Data Filter and Signal Processing

SR03-01Mk2 accepts NMEA Heading update frequencies from as low as 1 update per second and
up to 50 times per second for High Speed NMEA (38400 b/sec.)

Since the input data resolution is normally 0.1 degree with NMEA 0183, which is equal to 36
motor degrees at 360X, it is necessary to filter the data in order to rotate the Step/Synchro
Mechanical Repeaters smoothly.

The filter used by SR03-01Mk2 is a Low Pass Average Filter with a Filter Length of 0.5 seconds.

7.8.4 ”Lag Error” / “Schleppfehler”

The Low Pass averaging filter creates a Dynamic Error (Lag Error or “Schleppfehler”) that is
proportional to the Rate of Turn (ROT).

The Table below shows typical values at different Rates of Turn.

Table 10: Lag Error / Schleppfehler for different rate of turn

Speed Lag error Comments
60 [deg/min] 0,256 [deg] Slow speed
120 [deg/min] 0,512 [deg] Medium slow speed

8 Maintenance & Troubleshooting

8.1 Fans and Dust Filter
The SR03-01Mk2 has two fans for cooling the amplifiers. A dust filter is installed at the air intake
to protect the inside of the SR03-01Mk2 from dust and overheating.

The Dust Filter must be cleaned from time to time.

The fans run at all times, normally at a slow speed, but the speed will increase when the
temperature inside the unit increases. If the fans malfunction and stop the temperature inside the
SR03-01Mk2 will increase quickly and when it reaches 65 °C a Warning Alarm will be given, if the
inside temperature increases further to above 70 °C degrees, the SR03-01Mk2, will be shut off
automatically (see 6.5 Alarm System Description for details.)

The two fans are mounted in an exchangeable Filter Module that can be ordered as a spare part
and replaced.

If there is a temperature Warning or a High Temperature Alarm, this is a strong indication that it
is time to check the fans and clean the filter (see section 7.4.3 above.)

8.1.1 Exchange Filter or Fan Module

1. Remove the filter

cover from the
SR03-01Mk2 by
unscrewing four
screws.
