MOWER BLADE REMOVAL AND

INSTALLATION
Blade Removal

WARNING
Do not work under a raised mower deck unless it
is securely latched by the hooks on the Flex Wing
Mover frame.

WARNING
To avoid injury when handling blades, wear
leather gloves or wrap the blades in the area
where they will be held with heavy cloth or other
protective material.

1. Raise the mower decks to the maximum height

possible to allow you to work properly under the
mower.

56081480

1
2. To remove the blade, 1, use a wrench, 2, on part
“A” of the spindle, 3, and use another wrench, 4,
on the nut, 5. While holding the wrench on part
“A” of the spindle use the other wrench to loosen 3 2
the nut.

3. Remove the nut and blade from the spindle. 1

4. Repeat steps 1 -- 3 for the remaining two blades.

NOTE: The 430GM Rear Mower Deck has a total of

5
four blades. 4 A
76081440
IMPORTANT: Note and mark the mounting position
of each blade during removal. For prolonged blade 2
life it is recommended to rotate the blades to different
spindles during installation.

2-2
SECTION 58 -- MOWER -- CHAPTER 2
Inspection
1. Inspect the blades for any chips, cracks or bends.
Any damage that is not repairable through
sharpening only, warrants blade replacement.
Blade Installation
1. Place the new or sharpened and balanced
blades on the spindles with the curved edge (sail)
part of the blade facing “up” towards the 2 3
underside of the deck.

NOTE: Rotate the blades to different spindles (from

the removed position).

2. Reinstall the nut, 1, onto the spindle, 2.

1
3. Use a wrench, 3, on part “A” of the spindle. While A
holding the wrench, 3, torque the nut, 1, to 200 -- 76081440
210 N⋅m (148 -- 155 ft-Ibs).
3
IMPORTANT: Recheck and re-torque the blade after
the first hour of mower operation, and daily
thereafter.

2-3
SECTION 58 -- MOWER -- CHAPTER 2

MOWER BLADE SHARPENING

Inspect the mower blades before each use to be sure
they are properly installed and are in good condition.
Replace any blade that is bent, cracked, excessively
nicked or worn. Use only genuine New Holland
blades on this mower.

WARNING
To avoid injury when handling blades, wear
leather gloves or wrap the blades in the area
where they will be held with heavy cloth or other
protective material. Always wear eye protection
when sharpening blades.

IMPORTANT: When sharpening blades, remove the

same amount of material from each blade to maintain
balance. Unbalanced blades will cause excessive
vibration, which could damage gearbox and mower
components.
1. Use a mill file or grinder to sharpen the blades
following the original 45° angle pattern, If using
a grinder, use care so the cuffing edge does not
get too hot from friction, causing it to lose its heat
treat.

20040007

4
IMPORTANT: DO NOT sharpen cutting edge to a
razor edge. Leave a 1/32 inch edge as shown.

2. Check the blade for balance by placing a

horizontal rod with an O.D. less than 16 mm (0.63
in), in a vise.

3. Place the blade on the rod. The heavy side of the

blade should drop down.

4. Sharpen on the heavy side of the blade until the

blade remains balanced on the rod.

IMPORTANT: Shims are used to provide the correct

endplay, therefore different quantities and types of
shims may be needed.

SECTION 58 -- MOWER -- CHAPTER 3
8. Check the endplay of the output shaft, 1, by trying
to slide the spacer, 2, between the two bearings, 1
3. The spacer should not slide between the
bearings. However the spacer should be able to
be pushed off center a little bit, and then returned 4
to the original position.

9. If the spacer is able to slide between the

bearings. Tap on the top bearing with a hammer
and punch until the spacer doesn’t move, but the
3
2
spacer is still able to be pushed off center as
listed above. This is considered zero endplay.
86081491
10. Once the output shaft is set with the correct
endplay, install the snap ring, 4, onto output 29
shaft. Measure the distance between the snap
ring and the top bearing with a feeler gauge.

11. Stack the shims starting with the larger diameter

M52 x 0.3 shim, and then add the M48 x 0.5
shims to the stack as needed to match your
measurement as closely as possible between
the snap ring and bearing.

IMPORTANT: If you add too many shims which

exceed your measurement. The output shaft will bind
up and cause the gearbox to fail.
IMPORTANT: Shims are used to provide the correct
endplay, therefore different quantities and types of
shims may be needed.

BACKLASH MEASUREMENT
1. Place the parallel key section on the output shaft 2
of the gearbox in a vice. Then place a dial
indicator, 1, against the side of the input shaft, 2. 1
2. With the dial indicator set at zero, rotate the input
shaft, 2. The input shaft should only have a
backlash measurement of 0.051 - 0.102 mm
(0.002 - 0.004 in).

NOTE: If the backlash measurement is not correct

the gearbox will need to be taken apart and have the
shims readjusted. 86082523

IMPORTANT: If the shaft rotation is not smooth and 51

silent, the gearbox may break down suddenly.

3. Rotate the input shaft, 2, manually. The shaft

must rotate smoothly. If the shaft binds up at all
during rotation, the gearbox assembly will need
to be rechecked.

SECTION 58 -- MOWER -- CHAPTER 3

gearbox, 1, with SAE 80-90W gear oil. Fill until
gear oil starts to come out from the side oil level
hole, 2, of the gearbox.
