A. Combine each of the following pairs of simple sentences into one complex sentence
containing an adjective clause.
1. The theft was committed last night. The police has caught the man.

3. You are looking upset. Can you tell me the reason?

4. He had several plans for making money quickly. All of them have failed.
Answer: All the plans which he had for making money quickly have failed.
5. The landlord was proud of his strength. He despised the weakness of his tenants.
Answer: The landlord who was proud of his strenght despised the weakness of his tenants.
6. This is the village. I was born here.
Answer: This is the village where I was born.
7. You put the keys somewhere. Show me the place.
Answer: Show me the place where you put the keys.
8. Paul was an old gentleman. He was my travelling companion.
Answer: Paul who was an old gentleman was my travelling companion.
9. A fox once met a crane. The fox had never seen a crane before.
Answer: A fox which had never seen a crane before once met a crane.
10. The shop keeper keeps his money in a wooden case. This is the wooden case.
Answer: This is the wooden case where the shopkeeper keeps his money.
11. The man was sick. He looked very pale.
Answer: The man who looked very pale was sick.
12. He was sitting in the emergency room. It was very crowded.
Answer: He was sitting in the emergency room which was very crowded.
13. A nurse was nearby. He called to her.
Answer: He called to a nurse who was nearby.
14. The nurse called a doctor. He came quickly.
Answer: The nurse called a doctor who came quickly.
15. The doctor asked him to lie down. She looked very worried.
Answer: The doctor, who looked very worried, asked him to lie down.
16. She gave the man an injection. It made him go to sleep.
Answer: She gave the man an injection which made him go to sleep.
17. The Olympic snowboarding event was exciting. Many people watched it on TV.
Answer: The Olympic snowboarding event, which many people watched on TV, was
exciting.
18. It was the first time snowboarding had been included in the Olympics. Snowboarding is a new
sport.
Answer: It was the first time snowboarding, which is a new sport, had been included in the
Olympics.
19. The competition was very exciting. A Canadian won it.
Answer: The competition, which a Canadian won, was very exciting.

B. In each sentence, choose the correct relative pronoun to introduce the adjective clause.
Example: The cougar is a member of the cat family ______ grows to around 8 feet in length.
Answer : The cougar is a member of the cat family which grows to around 8 feet in length.
1. He’s the only student who knew the answer.
2. Did you see the painting which I bought in Paris?
3. This is the only bridge which goes to the island.

C. Change the second sentence into an adjective clause.


Example: Do you see the cat? It is on the roof.

2. I see an open table over there. It’s by the window.
Answer: I see an open table which is by the window over there.

4. The desk is made of oak. It was built by my friend.
Answer: The desk which was built by my friend is made of oak.
5. People shouldn’t throw stones. They live in glass houses.
Answer: People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.

D. Making Adjective Clauses with Objects


Example: I invited the professor. You met him last year.
Answer: I invited the professor whom you met last year.
1. The printer is broken. We were using it yesterday.
Answer: The printer which we were using yesterday is broken.
2. I don’t want to hear the song. We just heard it.
Answer: I don’t want to hear the song which we just heard.
3. That’s the man! I had a big argument with him yesterday.
Answer: That’s the man whom I had a big argument with yesterday.
4. He has a list of customers in his address book. He calls them once a month.
Answer: He has a list of customers whom he calls once a month in his address book.
5. He’s always talking about his car. He bought it last year in London.
Answer: He’s always talking about his car which he bought last year in London.
