Client Interviews – Tutorial 3

1. Prepare a proper checklist in conducting interviews in a law firm.

2. Discuss the various classes of questioning in a legal interview conducted with a client.

Client Interviews – Tutorial 4

Work in Groups of three (3) and think of a legal scenario.

Two Persons come out with a role play on the scenario, one is the Client, the other is the interviewer
whilst the 3rd person assesses the interviewer.

Make sure the Assessor refers to Interview Checklist when doing the assessment on the Interviewer

Once completed, change roles.

Note:- The legal scenario must change when parties change for a new role play.

All parties must have taken turns in being the assessor and the interviewer.

The Interview Checklist done by Assessor/s will be handed to tutor at the end of the tutorial.
INTERVIEW PEER ASSESSMENT CHECKLIST

INTRODUCTION.

Did the student:

Put the client at ease?

Explain the role and purpose of the interview?

Explain that s/he would be taking notes and mention client confidentiality?

Define a clear agenda / structure of the interview?

INTERVIEW CONDUCT.

Did the student:

Use a correct level of language for the client to ensure client understanding?

Ask appropriate questions?

Listen and react to what the client said?

Use time effectively?

Effectively answer queries raised by the clients?

ADVICE.

Did the student:

Outline the legal position and identify the legal issues?

Set out the strengths and weaknesses of the case?

Give realistic advice on further action and point out the consequences of such action?
