INSTRUCTIONS. SOLVE EACH SITUATIONAL PROBLEM WITH FULL SINCERITY AND HONESTY. ERASURES ARE NOT ALLOWED ON YOUR
FINAL ANSWERS. FINALIZE ALL YOUR ANSWERS USING PERMANENT PEN.PLACE YOUR FINAL ANSWERS ON A SEPARATE PAGE OF
PAPER. NO SOLUTIONS, NO POINTS.

SITUATION 1 (30 pts)

A single-span beam having a span of 6m has a cross-section of 2X0mm x 5Y0mm. It carries a uniformly distributed load throughout its span. The
beam has an allowable deflection of 1/360 of the span. Use your reference type of wood using NSCP 2015.

1. Determine the slenderness factor of the beam.

2. Determine the allowable bending stress.
3. Compute the uniformly distributed load it could carry.

SITUATION 2 (30 pts)

A wooden beam 2Y0mm x 4Z0mm has a single span of 6m. If the beam weight is 6.3 KN/m 3 and its allowable bending and shearing stresses are
12.X and 0.8Y MPa respectively.

1. Determine the size factor adjustment.

2. Determine the safe uniform load that the beam could support based on flexural stress with size factor adjustment.
3. If the beam was 300 mm x 300 mm diagonally loaded, considering also form factor adjustment, determine the allowable bending stress of the
beam.

SITUATION 3 (30 pts)

A single span member is 3.Z m in length and is made up of wood 2Y0mm x 4Z0mm wooden section. Use your reference type of wood using NSCP
2015. The beam carries a uniform load of 18.Z KN/m besides its own weight. Weight of wood is given by 8.XY KN/m3. The beam carries on axial
tensile load of 17Y.Z KN.

1. What is the actual tension/tensile stress in the beam if only tensile force was acting?
2. What is the interaction value of both bending and tensile stress?
3. Determine the ratio of the difference between the actual bending and tensile stress to the adjustment bending stress of slenderness.
