Business Communication

The observations can never be challenged as they are

facts and not perceptions. These are real world facts which have really happened.

In addition to this, we always wish to work with people

who satisfy our ego. They should agree with us to make us

like them more rather than debate and not accept our views.

There are three main ego states:- Child, Adult and Parent.

The child is further subdivided into obedient and free. The

parent is divided into nurturing and critical.

Whichever of the ego states are dominant, it makes our

personality. These ego states have been provided by Eric

Burne .

Then we came to know about transactional Analysis Proper

(TAP). These are the way conversations happen. We were

told the Five major type of transactions

Complementary transactions- Social issues include these

type of transactions

Crossed transactions- Changes the mode of transactions

Ulterior transactions- Said on social level but on a

personal level feel different about it

Gellos transaction- pleasing others

Carom transactions- Meant for someone else but said to

someone else

A perfect case to study about TAP and ego states is the

advertisement of Hari Sadhu versus subordinates.

During a conversation, "A" person looked at S after telling

the answer. He wished to know whether what he said is

right or not. This was an example of authority compliant

behaviour . He was looking at "S" for self-assurance.

We should not use the word "I " as it is a sign of

autocratic leadership.

Argument brutality is the method of conversation with

assumptions versus assumptions.

The expression "could have" shows expectations from

someone.

There are four main types of feelings: - glad, sad, mad

and afraid. Each of these feelings are further

subdivided into three types: - High, Medium and Low.

Emotional intelligence is the ability to know and get in

touch with the feelings . It helps in better understanding

of our own body.

There should be constancy of mind, body and heart.

There are 4 C's of communication. These are

communication, convince, confuse and corrupt.

Contract should always be the start of a conversation as it

tells about the boundaries that we have set for the

conversation and also provides us with a basic framework

for the conversation to happen.

Referencing style can be APA style (American

Psychological Association), IEEE type or Harvard Style. If

referencing from a website, give the link, author name and

accessed on date and time.

There are three parts of the Drama Triangle- Persecutor

(Critical parent), Rescuer (Nurturing Parent) and Victim

(Child). This is known as the Kartman's Triangle or

Drama Triangle.

BATNA is the best alternative to negotiated agreement. It

can be seen as the preparations if no negotiated agreement

is reached . It is the safety point to which the worst

negotiations must fall to and not below that.

Case 1- Hari Sadu versus Subordinates

In this case, the discussion happened on the famous

Naukari.com advertisement of Hari Sadu. He was an

arrogant boss with three more characters around him.

"S " told us to read the paper on Hari Sadu and

understand the scene-by-scene Transactional Analysis

Proper that was occurring. In the opening scene,

Subordinate 1 is always coming from obedient Child Ego

State while the boss is coming from Critical parent ego

state. He presents the reports while the boss throws them

away. Then in scene 2, the boss is trying to book a table

and is still in the critical parent ego state. He becomes

angry when he is asked to repeat his name.

In scene 3, the subordinate 1 tries to intervene and comes

from the obedient child ego state asking "May I" to help
the boss in booking the table. As his intentions are still not

clear, it can be assumed that the subordinate is still in the

Obedient Child ego state. This is also an example of

ulterior transaction as he was saying something on a

social level but felt different on a personal level. He had no

intention to help the boss as we would come to know later.

The boss is in Critical Parent State like always by

showing his angry gestures.

In scene 4, the real motives of the subordinate 1 come into

the picture. Carom transactions are used by the subordinate

1. He sates to the reception desk to write down the

name of the boss stating each letter in his name with a

critical behaviour of the boss. He states – H for Hitler,

A for Arrogant, R for Rascal and I for Idiot. This is a

parent to parent transaction with the hotel reception desk.

This is an example of complementary transaction.

But the real effect of the transaction was on the boss who

leaves his chair in shock. The boss enters into an Obedient

Child Ego state as he cannot understand what is happening

and depends on his subordinate 1 (Critical Parent) for the

future course of action. This is an example of Carom

transaction.

In the final scene,, subordinate 2 who was just

standing behind making tea for his boss is also empowered

and enters the Critical Parent ego state. When subordinate

1 is thinking about S for, he comes in and states that S is

for Shameless. This was a parent to parent conversation

with subordinate 1 but the actual effect was on the boss,

thus this also becoming an example of carom transaction.

Case 2- Story of Roshna

In this story, we had to divide ourselves in teams based

on the most offending character. The majority group

believed Ashok was the most offending character. Each

group leader was chosen . The majority group chose its

leader on the basis of calling out a person's name. When

"B" was called on to the stage to explain his group's view,

he stated the views of the people around him. This led to

lack of trust among others. One other person from the

group came to express her view on the issue. This led to

leadership crisis as B's limelight was stolen .

There was also another case when a person sitting behind

told the person to not ask questions while the leader of

the other group is speaking. He wished to conduct the

session in a better way. But he didn't realized how it

would affect the other person. The other person didn't

speak for some time but after that he again started

repeating his behaviour .

In one group, the leader started to express the views of the

group but he did so by using the word "I". This is a

sign of autocratic leadership and showed the behaviour of

self-promotion. This would lead to disharmony in the

group as members would think their work does not get

credit.

Some members who had not come that day also came to

know the story from others. This was in contravention to

the confidentiality agreement of the first day. They decided

their groups based on the story told to them by others.

But the story was told from the perspective of the person

who had already made their mind about the most offensive

character thus some details were missing.

Some people also changed their groups. One person did so

on the first day itself when he was the only person in that

group. He went to the group with the most members.

Another person joined a minority group from the majority

group. He stated that it was due to the change in

perspective. "S " asked the leader of the majority group

what he felt with the decision of the other person. He said

the other person should have informed about his decision to

the group before leaving. Another person was asked to

have a conversation. She, unlike the leader, was trying to

understand the viewpoint of the other person. But after a

conversation, she tried to take the upper hand by saying

"It's alright ". It was a subconscious move to get an

apology from the other person for leaving the group.

At last session, people who had not spoken were asked to

come to reasons on why they did not do so. Other people

were asked to bring solutions to the different issues that

happened during the discussion. In the end, everyone sat in

a circle discussing ways to take the class forward. Two

people suggested ways which would be better in their view.

One of the ways was role play and the other was methods

like Yoga to better connect with our body.
