ANT TO MAKE YOUR OWN QUALITY CHICKEN FEEDS/ ANIMAL FEEDS AND MAKE MONEY?

I was doing a market research for several weeks online to find out if small scale poultry farmers can
buy affordable chicken feed from a new reliable supplier like me. I have access to small scale farmers
from Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, Swaziland, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe. I was pleasantly
surprised that I can reach up to 200 000 farmers who are willing to buy chicken feeds from me.
That's over R30 million in potential revenue earnings per month!!

To make chicken/animal feeds, farmers need to know the Digestive Crude Protein(DCP)
requirements for birds or animals. This is the basic nutritional requirements for any feed
preparation. Farmers need to know the crude protein content of each of the ingredients used to
make chicken feed. These are the common ingredients used to make feeds and the DCP values of
each ingredient:

Whole maize - 8.23%

Soya - 45%

Fish meal (omena) - 55%

Maize bran - 7%

Sunflower - 35%

Each category of chickens has its own nutritional requirements. Let's look at layers for now: layers
require about 18% crude protein in their daily feed. To make a 70kg of of feed for layers, these are
the ingredients you need:

34kg of whole maize

12 kg of soya

8kg of omena (fishmeal)

10kg of maize bran

6kg of lime (a source of calcium)

To make one tonne of feed, multiply each of the ingredient by 14.

NB: make sure all the feed you make is used within one month to ensure that it remains fresh and
does not deteriorate in quality.

Layers feed should contain a Digestive Crude Protein of between 16-18% and must contain nutrients
like vitamins, minerals, amino acids and calcium (lime) in their standard quantities. Farmers need to
maintain the right feed quantity for chickens at each stage of growth:

* Layers chicks- minimum of 60g per day for 2 to 2.5 months.

* Young chickens (pullets) about to start laying eggs- layers diet of 140g per day.

Supplement their diet with vegetables, edible plant leaves and fruit peelings.

There are companies that do calibration services for farmers who want to make their own feeds at a
large scale. Please farmers make sure you buy raw materials from reputable suppliers.
Poultry Feed Making machines for small scale farmers cost from R15 299 and some cost US$750.
