ESSAY: THE SELF

By: Rosa P. Palconit

Did you know who you are? Are you familiar with the word Self? According to the
definition of Merriam Webster, the self is a person's essential being that distinguishes them
from others, especially considered as the object of introspection or reflexive action. This
concept gives the idea of self. Somehow, there is a various viewpoint for what is self. These
are, self is human nature, self is identity and self is a reflection.

Self is human nature because it possesses several body parts particularly our legs,
hands, even our brain and heart the important parts of the human body.Including the five
senses of human. The sense of touch, sight, hearing, taste and smell. In relation, this will
indicate that our self is the real us.

Self is identity or personality. Our identity helps us to identify who we are. An

example is recognizing our facial appearance. Perceiving through our name which leads in
identifying our individuality. There's an instance that someone may forget our name but they
recognize us through our face.

Self is a reflection, analyzing our self for who we are and what we are is a sign that
we are revealing the actual us. Reflecting our self is describing what is our attitude or
behaviors. For example, you are reflecting that you are a generous person, your
characteristics define your action. Which you are reflecting that you are a helpful person.
Moreover, another aspect that our self is the reflection is that thinking or looking at a mirror
how you look or describing your image. And considering that when you reflect yourself is
seeing your soul.

In conclusion, the self is human nature, identity and reflection of ourselves. It is the
concept of a variety of impressions regarding the word self. Furthermore, knowing and
understanding of what self is, is accepting that these three sub-topics that are stated above
are pointing only one idea focusing on self. Before I end up this argument, I would like to
leave the quotation of Aristotle that knowing yourself is the beginning of your wisdom. It
starts with you, but if you don't know to look at yourself in the mirror—or refuse to—then you
haven't done the essential task necessary to even start growing your views.
