OSHA’s Mission
• Congress created OSHA to assure safe and healthful conditions for working men
and women by setting and enforcing standards and providing training, outreach,
education and compliance assistance.
• Under the OSHA law, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful
workplace for their workers.

Why was OSHA created?


• 14,000 employees died annually from job-related injuries and illnesses
• Nearly 2.5 million employees were disabled
• Ten times as many person-days were lost due to job-related disabilities than from
strikes
• 300,000 new cases of occupational disease
