Gumpaste Fantasy Flower

QUICK REFERENCE GUIDE

PETAL LAYERS:
USE A 6 PIECE FLUTED CIRCLE CUTTER SET
BUD:   1 petal - smallest circle cutter in the set (place it high up on the styrofoam ball)
FIRST ROW:   3 petals - the next size up (the second circle cutter) The top of the petals should be
slightly higher than the bud.
SECOND ROW:   3 petals - the next size up (the third size circle cutter) The top of the petals should
be the same height or slightly higher than the previous row.
THIRD ROW:   3 petals - the next size up (the fourth size circle cutter) Cut these into a 'V' shape on
one end of the circles and set into a rounded bowl to firm up for about 20 minutes before attaching.
The top of the petals should be about the same height as the previous row.
FOURTH ROW: 3 petals - the next size up (the fifth size circle cutter) Cut these into a 'V' shape on one
end of the circles and set into a rounded bowl to firm up for about 20 minutes before attaching. The
top of the petals can be about the same height or slightly lower.
FIFTH ROW: 5 petals - a size down from the previous row (the fourth size circle cutter) Cut these into
a 'V' shape on one end of the circles and set into a rounded bowl to firm up for about 20 minutes
before attaching. The top of the petals should be slight lower than the previous row.
You won't use the largest circle cutter (the sixth size up).

TIPS:
Use only gumpaste, not fondant
Roll out the gumpaste very thin (about a 4-5 if you're using a pasta roller)
Only cut out the petals you are about to use. Keep unused gumpaste covered in a sealed ziplock bag
to keep it from drying out.
Let your completed rose dry at least overnight before dusting.
You can lightly steam your flower to set in the petal dust. Just twirl it for a few seconds in front of
the steam.
Once dusted, keep in a cool, dry place and out of sunlight. (Sunlight will fade the color.)

INSTRUCTIONS:
Wrap several 18 gauge wires together with floral tape and hot glue into a 1 1/2 inch styrofoam ball. Let
set up.
Add the petals in the sizes and quantities stated above in the 'petal layer' section.
For the bud, attach the petal very high up on the styrofoam ball with a bit of water. Make sure to curl
it around to shape it into a cone. This part may take a bit of practice and fidgeting.
Continue on adding your petals. When you cut them out, make sure to thin the edges with a ball tool.
Once you thin the edges, hold your ball tool like a pencil and go back and forth around the edges to
ruffle the petals,
For the last three rows, make sure to cut the circles into a 'V' shape and let them set up in a bowl for
about 20 minutes to firm up a bit before adding to your rose. You can attach them while holding the
rose upside down. You'll also want to let the rose dry upside down. Just hang the rose upside down
by bending the wire and looping it over a drying rack.
