IDEAS AND PHILOSOPIHES THAT AUTHOR TRIED TO

EXPRESS IN THE POEM.

The poem “The Chimney Sweeper” in the “Song of Innocence” and “Songs of Experience”
encloses about the agony of the little kids who are being forced to lead a miserable life. This
poem also says about the innocence of the children who are compelled to earn their bread and
butter by working as chimney sweepers. This poem also speaks for the sorrow.

Here in this poem the Chimney Sweepers the speaker tries to convey or express how he gets
tangled in sweeping chimney business. The speaker confronts that his father sold him to the
chimney sweeping work after the death of his mother despite he was at it his young age wherein
he could not properly pronounce the word “sweep” and pronounces it as “weep” and wept. He
also accounts about his fellow chimney sweeper Tom who is working there. Tom was hurt as his
head was shaved but then the speaker tries hard to console him by saying that and then goes to
sleep. Tom had a dream in which all the sweepers are kept in coffins and then an angel comes
and helps them out and sets the children free. Then the children starts playing in the sun and
angel comes and tells Tom that he will have a heaven of his own. Next morning he wakes up and
strongly decides to work hard believing that his hard work will never go in vain and sure he will
get his reward.

The poem explains and describes about the pitiful situations of the children who are working as
the chimney sweepers as a labourers at a very tender age, the rampant bondage labour,
exploitation of children, child labour and pitiable conditions of orphan children or financially
backward children who are been sold by their poor parents. This poem attacks the so called
advanced society who keeps their eyes shut when all such exploitations takes place right in front
of them. But try to act as being responsible or generous among their near and dear by conducting
some charity events for poor and down-trodden people in the country. And now in the present
society also there are such kind of social that are still been prevailed in.

Misery, death and hope are the major themes that are been covered in the poem. This poem
depicts the miseries of children as chimney sweepers and containment in their lives. Most of the
working class children are forced to work for long hours with very low wages in the factories
under the upper class people who owned those factories. All the children working in the factories
are forced to work very hard and made them to do difficult jobs. As a result, the condition of the
children working their was so pathetic and pitiable. Those children were forced to work for the
benefits of their parents. The antithesis between the vision of summer sunshine and this dark,
cold reality is deeply ironic. Even though the victims have been mollified, the readers know that
innocent trust is abused..
The poet tries to convey the idea of not losing hope at any point of time in their life through the
mouths of two young speakers. In this poem at first the children are very sad and unhappy at the
beginning with their job but later on they tried to accept the reality and thinking that it is their
fait to be so and after having a good vision their lives started to become easy for them. He thinks
of good future and also tries to be optimistic towards his life. But in reality Tom feels like he is
still in the same situation and feels like being trapped in the same job and also assumes that his
life in dangerous. Working-class children very being forced very badly and compelled to
complete their works in the factory. The children working as the chimney sweepers started
believing that their hard work will surely pay them in the long run which will make them
jubilant. If all do their duty, they need not fear any harm.

The children working as chimney sweepers felt as parents have done no injury to them, forcing
them into enslavement, teaching them the notes of woe and then their parents head to church to
praise god and his priest and king. These parents collude with church and state, actively
constructing a heaven, actively building or constructing a heaven out of others misery. It is the
established church, mercenary, and uncaring parents.
