INTRODUCTION

Networking refers to the hardware and software used to connect computers, allowing
them to communicate with one another. Cabling, network operating systems, and a
wide variety of components flesh out a network that caninclude a wide variety of
computers and devices.

LEARNING ACTIVITY 1

CREATION OF NETWORK CABLE

Straight-Through (ST), Cross-Over (CO) and Roll-Over (RO)

OBJECTIVES

________________________________________________________________________
3
IT 316L NETWORKING 1

• Identify the standard color combination for Straight-Through (ST), Cross-Over

(CO) and Roll- Over (RO) cables
• Distinguish the differences of each wired connectors
• Experience how to create your own wired cable connector
• Experience how to use properly the crimping tool
• Experience how to test the network cable using cable tester
• Demonstrate how to create Straight-Through (ST), Cross-Over (CO) and Roll-
Over (RO) network cables

BACKGROUND / SCENARIO

In this learning activity, you will study how to cut, strip, arrange, crimp, and test
CAT5E (Category 5E) Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) network cables using the RJ45
(Registered Jack 45) as connector. Each of these activities must be done properly to
ensure that the created cable works as intended. This activity will also highlight the most
common mistakes that can occur during creation, which in turn leads to a defective
cable.

PROCEDURES:

Step 1. Arrange all the materials needed:

• 3-Meter CAT 5E Cable

• 10 Pcs. RJ 45
• Crimping Tool
• Cable Stripper
• Wire Cutter
• Cable Tester

Note: You need to perform this after preparing the materials.

Stripper, Wire Cutter and, Cable Tester)

Step 2. Get the 3-meter CAT 5E cable. Cut it into three (3) 1-meter cables.

Step 3. Let’s start with the creation of your own cable connectors.

4
IT 316L NETWORKING 1

3.1 Get the three CAT 5E cables. For each cable, do the following steps using
the standard color arrangement for Straight-Through (ST) (See figure1 for
details), Cross-Over (CO) (See figure2 for details) and Roll- Over (RO)
cables (See figure 3 for details).
3.2 Peel the outer coating of the UTP, stripping off only about an inch of the
jacket, to expose the four pairs of colored wires.

Note: Be sure not to take off too much of the jacket, because it will have to be clamped
down inside of an RJ 45 connector. If there is too much wire, they will have to be
shortened with wire cutter.

3.3 Once there is a correct amount of wires exposed, unwind the four pairs of
twisted wires.

Note: When unwinding them, try to bend them back and forth a bit, so that the copper
can flatten easier. You will notice also a white strand, just feel free to cut it but do not
pull it out.

3.4 Arrange the colored wires from left to right by following the standard color
combination guide for Straight-Through (ST), Cross-Over (CO) and Roll-
Over (RO).
3.5 Cut the excess tips to make a straight edge
3.6 Put them properly inside the RJ 45, making sure that the ends are visible at
the tip of the RJ 45 and the jacket is aligned with the clamp.
3.7 Place the RJ 45 inside the crimping tool 8P (See figure 4 for detailed parts
of a crimping tool) and squeeze until you hear a slight tick sound.
3.8 Repeat steps 3.2 up to 3.7 with the other end of the cable.
3.9 Get the cable tester (See figure 5 for the detailed parts of cable tester) and
insert the ends of the cable into the proper slots.
3.10 Turn the tester on and observe if the lights are synchronized for both ends.

Note: You can see the combination of numbers in table 1 below to ensure that
connectors are okay.

3.11 If one or more lights did not flash or if they did not flash in the correct order,
cut off the RJ 45 on the defective end and repeat the steps with a new
RJ 45.

LEARNING ACTIVITY REFLECTION OUTCOMES

a. Brief background of the location/venue you accomplished the Learning

Activity.
In our house I accomplished my activity with the help of my professor that
teaching me in synchronus class

b. My Memorable Picture while performing the Learning Activity1.

This is me while performing the activity

I learned a lot with the instruction in the activity module

This is me with Straight through and cross-over

I learned the difference between these two and the light patterns.
Note: Please follow the format:
• For each figure, write two (2) paragraphs.
For the first paragraph, write a simple description after the picture.
For the second paragraph, discuss what you have technically learned after
this learning activity.

Note: Evidence picture, description and discussion is a must.

c. Personal Experience

i. Explain what you have learned from the Learning Activity.

I started this subject without knowledge in networking but now I learned
how to do the straight through and cross-over and I learned how to use
different tools in networking and I hope I learn more with this course,

ii. Explain what you have felt during the Learning Activity.
I felt happy when the lights are blinking correctly and it’s not hard to do this
activity because our instructor was guided me correctly.

iii. Explain what you plan to do after the Learning Activity.

My plan is to explore and study about networking
