Common network cable types

 Coaxial cable

 Unshielded
twisted pair

 Fiber optic
Overview
 Twistedpair is made of insulated
copper wires that have been
twisted around each other to
form wire pairs
 Twisted-pair cabling is divided
into two categories
 Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP)
 Shielded Twisted Pair (STP)
Unshielded Twisted Pair

(UTP)
UTP is a set of twisted pairs within a plastic
sheath
 The common use for this type of cable is
telephone wiring and LAN communications
 Two popular UTP cabling types are Category 3
and Category 5 UTP
Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP)
It is composed of 4-pair twist wirings.

Shielded Twisted Pair (STP)

 STP includes a protective sheathing around the

copper wire
 The twisted pair is wrapped in foil to cut down
on outside interference and electromagnetic
radiation
Types of Cable
Straight-through: A
straight-through network
cable is just what the
name implies, a cable
that passes data straight
through from one end to
another.

Cross-over: A cross-over
cable is used to connect two
computers via their NICs,
without using a hub or
switch.
Straight Through Cable
A cable used in different devices
for
networking like PC to Router.

For a straight through cable, both ends use the
same wiring schematics.
Cross-over cable

A cable connection used in the

same devices like PC to PC

For a crossover cable, both ends use
different wiring schematics.
MAKING CONNECTIONS TOOLS
Making connections - Steps
1. Strip cable/skin off cable
2. Untwist each pair and straighten each
wire
3. Arrange wires
4. Trim wires to size
5. Insert the wires into RJ45
6. Place the connector into a crimping
tool; squeeze hard so that the handle
reaches its full swing.
7. Use cable tester to test
Step 1 : Skin off the cable jacket

3.0 cm long

Avoid cutting into

conductor insulation
Step 2 : Untwist each pair and
straighten each wire

 Sort wires by insulation

colors
Step 3 – Arrange wires

 568B: WO-O WG-Bl WBl-G WBr-Br
Step 4 – Trim wires to size
 Trim all wires evenly
 Leave about ½” of wires exposed
Step 5 : Insert the wires into the RJ45
connector
the pins facing up
Step 6 : Place the connector into a crimping
tool, and squeeze hard so that the handle
reaches its full swing.

 Squeeze firmly to crimp connecter
