Describe

Wake up to the smell of lovely coffee and pie shops amongst cosy cottages in the township of
Cangura. This will be the first pitstop of the day.

Upon arrival at Binna Burra, we stop by the majestic gateway of Lamington National Park. This
commences our walk through a fascinating variety of forest and heath, descending through the
head of Kurraragin Valley out into Daves Creek country. Witness spectacular views over the
escarpement of the Numinbah Valley. There is an option of climbing onto Surprise Rock for 360-
degree views.

The circuit passes through several distinctive vegetation types: warm and cool subtropical
rainforest along the Border Track; warm temperate rainforest, containing many examples of
ancient angiosperms such as coachwood Ceratopetalum apetalum, in Nixon Creek's
headwaters; and wet sclerophyll forest with giant New England ash Eucalyptus campanulata.

Upon completion of the walk, we will return to Binna Burra Mountain Lodge for a cosy afternoon
tea, soaking in stunning views of Hinze Dam in the distance.

Walks Classifications

A walk is Graded according to the Walks Classifications below: the horizontal distance covered (length), the height gain
and ground conditions. The first letter relates the horizontal distance and height gain as one descriptor(Short, Medium
and Long), the second letter relates the difficulty of the walk (Easy, Medium or Rough).

For multi-day walks: distance (length), altitude gain, duration and grade should reflect the maximum daily figure.
Length
SNQ Short non-qualifying easy walk or stroll with all ages welcome, (5 km or less) (nearly all of easydifficulty)..
NQ Non-qualifying (less than 8 km).
S Short (8 to 12 km).
M Medium (12 and up to 20 km).
L Long (over 20 km).
Every 100 metres ascended counts as one extra kilometre.

Difficulty
E Easy: on tracks, beaches and open paddocks.
M Medium: may include some off-track walking with limited minor scrub-bashing.
Significant distances of awkward ground should render a walk as rough (R), say more than 50 metres of
boulders or hard scrub and more than 250 m of moderate scrub. These and shorter distances of difficulty, should be
mentioned in the Description. A direct climb of 2 metres or more should be cited in the description.
R Rough: off-track, could include scrub bashing, creek crossings, negotiating rocks, etc...

Pace may depend on the inclinations of the party. Trip Coordinators may specify slow, medium (moderate) or fast, or a
combination thereof.

Duration of a trip is an estimate and includes breaks such as morning tea and lunch.

Examples for Grade:

A walk of 10 km with 300 m height gain along a gently sloping track is considered ME: - Height, 300meters equals 3 km,
plus the 10km horizontal distance gives a distance equivalent of 13km – Medium. A significantly sloping track is of
Medium difficulty.
A walk of 9 km off-track in bad scrub of 200 m height gain is SR
Any walk of 13 km including 500 m on awkward boulders and 400 m height gain on track is MR

When you offer a walk preferably send it to or notify the relevant Walks Programmer (listed at the back of the Circular),
who will send it on to the Walks Data Officer. This helps the Programmer with their programming of walks, and saves
them looking for another walk when not needed or double booking the day.

SHOULD YOU GET AN OFFICIAL PREVIEW FORM WITH YOUR TRIP DETAILS, ALWAYS ENSURE IT IS ACCURATE

TRIP COORDINATOR RESPONSIBILITY FOR PRIVATE LAND AND OWNERS

1 Decide the precise route(s) you would like to use and when.

2 The Club has Public Liability Insurance (PLI) cover for official walks. A private landowner is covered by our Club for public
liability resulting from Club activities. The Treasurer can be contacted for a copy of our certificate of currency for PLI cover
if required.

3 Obtain prior permission directly from the landowner (or official designate) in a timely manner. Owner contact details may
be obtained from the Landowners Liaison Officer (LLO). If not known obtain and advise land owner contact details to the
LLO.

4 Discuss your parking, route, timing, “no go areas / times” and party numbers for owner approval. NEVER enter a property
on the Club’s behalf without permission.
Ask the Owner about any “do’s and don’ts” / their expectations and animals. Thank the owner for allowing us to walk on / in
their property.
If cancelled, tell the owner ASAP to prevent misunderstanding or misadventure by others being attributed to the Club.

5 In general:
● Leave gates and fences as found unless otherwise instructed by the owner.
● Avoid damaging property, especially fences and gates.
● Do not block accesses with vehicles or goods
● Avoid, otherwise approach animals slowly so as to prevent panic, stampede or injury.
● Do not walk through crops.
● Avoid impinging on the privacy of landowners and staff; do not walk close to buildings unless directly invited to do so
● Keep away from potentially dangerous machinery, spraying, tree felling, 4WD bike runs and active shooting areas.
● Do not bathe / swim in likely drinking water
● If a fire is allowed, ensure it is utterly extinguished (and tidy) before leaving
● If camping or using facilities / infrastructure ensure all is at least as tidy and clean as found (sinks, floors, stoves) switch
off power, gas, water, etc., cover wood and / or secure as required.
● Collect any fees agreed.

6 Immediately after the walk, ensure gates are as found (open or closed) otherwise as directed by the owner, keys are
returned and agreed fees promptly paid. Advise the owner of any broken items, fence issues or sick or escaped stock.

7 Don’t leave any rubbish, remember ‘If you can carry it in, you can carry it out’

8 If the owner would like a chat, allow time to avoid apparent rudeness

9 After the walk send a thank you note or arrange for one to be sent to the landowner and report any incidents to the Safety
Officer / Executive ASAP. Write a report on the trip naming all who participated, even if no incidents, send it to the General
Manager.
