Identifying Safe Website

Every year technology is increasing tremendously and actively. Teacher continue to

focus on ways to increase students academically throughout the web. While students are told
to use the website to access different types of information for their assignments. It is valuable
for teachers and students to use this available sources even though not everything online is
considered safe.
During Covid-19, there has been a need and increase on online classes. Each students
are demanded to access the web in order to complete their assignments. I understand that
schools are operating so hard to block websites and are constantly monitoring students.
However, blocking and restricting websites doesn’t do anything good for students in the long
run but teaching them how to be safe online enables them to practice good habits for their
entire life. (Lucas, 2018). Before classes begin in the morning, teacher should consider these
questions before starting off the class online. Do my students know on how to prevent the
dangers on the web? Has the parent been informed about the risk that their children face with
social media? Have I as a teacher created a safe environment in my online assignments? If none
of these questions where applied within your classroom, then as a teacher we should act in
order to keep the safety of the students aware and prioritize at all time.
Simply by taking the time to inform the parent with resources and taking small steps
with your students on how they can identify and protect themselves from unsafe web.
There are five signs a teacher can explain to the student about searching the web, Look for the
“S” in HTTPS, check for a website privacy policy, find their contact information, verify their trust
seal, and know the signs of website malware (Tammany, 2018). Even though this information
can be more focus on older students you can still inform younger students with fun activities or
using website that are safe like brain pop, Nessly, and prodigy. In any case, they can be
manageable and academically helpful for the student to be safely engage.
Additionally, anyone can rely on the C.R.A.A.P Test which is an acronym for Currency,
Relevancy, Authority, Accuracy and Purpose (Karen, 2016). No matter what, where always
going to see unreliable source in the web, so using this procedure will help you find what is
appropriate for your work. Such as asking yourself simple question like is the website current, is
the author an expert and does the website provide evidences. When we understand this simple
ideas, it will only take a certain amount time for the student to practice this technique in a
classroom setting or at home. Overall, it’s all about encouraging and teaching the students to
be respectable and obedient when surfing the web.
