THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

IV – trend sa teaching method

For nearly 20 years, the right to education for all has been promoted

by the Global Campaign for Education (GCE). A philosophy based inclusive

education believes that all students, regardless of disability, are and should

be a part of the school's culture. Inclusion of students with special needs

involves modernizing the provision of instruction, curricula, co-curricular,

learning environments, assessment and learning outcomes to meet

contemporary learning needs. Teaching methodologies is one of the

determinant factors of better academic performance of children. Teachers’

performance in an inclusive education class gains more importance and

becomes leading factor for proper inclusion and attainment of students with

disabilities. (Suleymanov, F. 2014)

In fact, the Philippine Department of Education (DepEd) is already

adhering to the principles of “Education for All” of the Individuals with

Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) of the USA. This shows that DepEd is now

open for admitting children with special needs and attention in the regular

education. Particularly in National Capital Region there were more than

8,000 SPED students at the elementary level and is lacking in resources such

as hearing aids and sign language books. As the number of enrollees is

increasing, there are probably teachers who are being assigned to teach

SPED classes despite not having the adequate training to do so. Taking the

students with disabilities out of isolation means to spend in general

education classrooms in majority of their days rather than in separate

special education classes. That means general education teachers have to

teach more students with disabilities, but preparing teachers with training

programs are not enough.

The objective of this study is to determine the effectiveness of the

teaching methodologies used by the elementary education teachers in Pasig

Elementary School in teaching their students with special needs and its

effect to the academic performance, as well as to use the findings to make

recommendations for modifications of teaching methodologies in achieving

the desired goals of SPED students’ learning. Bakit gusto pag aralan ang

The result of the study will help the Pasig Elementary School to know if

there is inadequacy in the program implemented and a need to improve the

teachers’ effectiveness for teaching students who need special education

services.
Significance of the Study

This study will be undertaken to find out the effectiveness of teaching

methodologies used by the elementary education teachers towards the

academic performance of SPED students in Pasig Elementary School.

The results of the study will benefit the various sectors as follows:

State Agency. This study may benefit the government for helping

discover of possible inadequacy of education and its funds especially in the

need of curriculum development.

Curriculum Planner. Through this study, people who plan the

curriculum will also be beneficial for the curriculum enrichment by knowing

the evaluated and measured changes of society and the different learning

styles of the students.

School Administrators. This study will contribute to the

improvement of implementing the appropriate methodologies and

preparedness through enhancing the learning environment of the students.

Students. The direct recipients of the output of this study are the

students with special needs. Improvements of the methodologies,

preparedness and effectiveness can produce better learning environment.

Parents. This study benefits the parents of students with special

needs. Entrusting themselves self-assurance that their children are given

quality education that would make them functional individuals in this society.

Teachers. This study will be beneficial to the teachers especially the

elementary education teachers who handle students with special needs.

Through this study, teachers may discover the importance of quality

education and how prepared the nation to the learning of SPED students.

Future Researchers. This study may serve as a guide about the

effectiveness of elementary education teachers in the academic performance

of students with special needs and may be one of the bases for a new theory

that may arise.

Statement of the Problem

The major problem of this current study will determine the

effectiveness of the teaching methodologies of elementary education

teachers towards the academic performance of SPED students in Pasig

Elementary School.

In order to accomplish the main objective of this study, the researcher

will attempt to answer the following questions:

1. How may the teaching methodologies used in social studies of the

elementary teachers in Pasig Elementary School be described in terms of:

1.1 Lecture method

1.2 Discussion method

1.3 Tutoring method

1.4 Collaboration method

1.5 Play way method

2. How may the academic performance of SPED students in Pasig

Elementary School be described in terms of:

2.1 Class recitations

2.2 Test scores

2.3 General Point Average (GPA)

3. Do the teaching methodologies of elementary teachers in terms of lecture

method, discussion method, tutoring method, collaboration method, and

play way method significantly affect the academic performance of SPED

students in terms of test scores and GPA in Pasig Elementary School?

4. What implications may be thrown from the result of the study to improve

the teaching methodologies of elementary teachers in Pasig Elementary

School?

2. Discussion method

3. Tutoring method  GPA

4. Collaboration method

5. Play way method

Figure 1. Conceptual Framework of the study

As can be seen in Figure 1, the conceptual framework of the study

indicates that the independent variable is teaching methodologies which is

one factor to look for the development of academic performance of children

in terms of lecture method, discussion method, tutoring method,

collaboration method and play way method.

Thus, the students’ performance plays an important role in assessing

the effectiveness of different teaching methodologies. Which the researcher

indicates it as the dependent variable of the study. According to IDEA,

instruction for SPED students should be outcome based so that the students

could make satisfactory progress in meeting the grade-level standards

required by the General Education curriculum (Bulgren et al., 2013;

McLeskey, Waldron, & Redd, 2012). In this study the researcher focuses on

the academic performance in terms of test scores and GPA of the SPED

students in Pasig Elementary School.

As shown in Figure 1 of the conceptual framework, the arrow

connecting the boxes indicate the hypothesized relationship between the

teaching methodologies of elementary teachers and academic performance

of SPED students. Based on the framework, the study hypothesized that

teaching methodologies of elementary teachers in terms of lecture method,

discussion method, tutoring method, collaboration method, and play way

method do not significantly affect the academic performance of SPED

students in terms of test scores and GPA in Pasig Elementary School.

Hypothesis of the Study

The hypothesis of the study is tested at 0.05 level of significance.

Teaching methodologies of elementary teachers in terms of lecture method,

discussion method, tutoring method, collaboration method, and play way

method do not significantly affect the academic performance of SPED

students in terms of test scores and GPA in Pasig Elementary School.

Scope and Delimitation

The study is concerned primarily on the effectiveness of the teaching

methodologies of the Elementary Education teachers towards the Academic

Performance of SPED students in Pasig Elementary School during the 3 rd and

4th quarter of Academic Year 2020 – 2021.

The study is further delimited on the teaching methodologies of the

teachers in terms of lecture method, discussion method, tutoring method,

collaboration method, and play way method. The researcher delimits the

academic performance in terms of test scores and GPA of the SPED

students. Similarly, the study is further delimited on the teachers who only

teach Social Studies and handle SPED students from primary level grades 1

to 3.
However, this study has the limitation of conducting online amidst the

situation of COVID19 because the study is in need of thorough observation

and interview with the respondents.

Definition of Terms

The following terms are defined operationally and conceptually for the

better understanding of the study.

Teaching Methodologies. It is related to the nature of content of a subject

to be taught. Teaching method is a style of presentation of content in

classroom. It involves the choice of what is to be taught and in which order

is to be presented.

Academic Performance. It is the test scores and general percentage

average of the students.

Special Education is a form of learning provided to students with

exceptional needs, such as students with learning disabilities or mental

challenges.

Curriculum Enrichment is the process of selectively modifying a

curriculum by adding educational content or new learning opportunities.

Inclusive Education means that all students attend and are welcomed by

their neighborhood schools in age-appropriate, regular classes and are

supported to learn, contribute and participate in all aspects of the life of the

school.

Learning environment refers to the diverse physical locations, contexts,

and cultures in which students learn.
