Statement of the Problem:

 How can we reduce the carbon emission made by the cars?

 What will be the benefits for having this type of pavement?

 How does this pavement absorb carbon emission?

Objectives:

 To know the process in manufacturing this type of pavement

 To lessen the problem in air pollution

 To maintain a livable community

 To perform a long-term solution in reducing greenhouse gases

Project Description:

The streets are one of the top contributors in air pollution, this includes the car, trucks,

motorcycle, etc. with carbon emission they are producing. Now to lessen the negative gases that

comes from these modes of transportation an innovation arises. Researchers at Rice University in

Houston, Texas, have developed a “new form of porous asphalt that can soak up 154% of its

weight in carbon dioxide,” according to a university press release. To create the new porous

material, the researchers heated Gilsonite—a common type of asphalt—at ambient pressure to

eliminate any unnecessary organic molecules. Then, they heated it again in the presence of

potassium hydroxide for about 20 minutes to synthesize oxygen-enhanced porous carbon with a

surface area of 4,200 square meters per gram—much higher than that of the previous materials,

the release explains. For comparison, the team’s initial asphalt-based porous carbon collected

carbon dioxide from gas streams under pressure at the wellhead and released it when the pressure
was released. The carbon dioxide was then repurposed underground while the porous carbon was

ready for immediate reuse. The team found that the new and improved version of this material

can remove carbon dioxide at just 54 bar pressure. Nowadays we need these types of innovation,

it may not remove all the greenhouse gases, but it can help to reduce the amount of those (gases).

Significance of the Study:

This study hope to establish a better understanding on how pavement can contribute in

decreasing air pollution. Furthermore, the study could be importance to the following:

Future Researchers. The innovation presented may be used as a reference in conducting

a new research. This study also serves them as a background or an overview of how pavement

can absorb carbon emission.

Commuters. They are the primary road users; they will benefit the most in this

innovation. This pavement may lessen the burden of the commuters in inhaling toxic gases.
