Electric Equipment Ingress Protection Rating For Electrical Equipment Exposed to Open Deck
Reference is made to Marine classification societies, like DNV,
ABS, and with respect to IEC 92 Publication recommendations on Ingress Protection (IP) of electric equipment permanently installed in open deck.
There is a reference table given in the respective rulebook as
guidance on the compliance of IP protection of electric equipment in various locations of the ship, rig or platform.
Citing example of rule: DNV rule 2003, Pt.4, Ch.8, Sec.10,
B200, Table B1:- ABS MODU rule 2001, Pt. 4, Ch.3, Sec.1, 15 and Sec. 3.1.1:- ABS rule 2003, Pt.4, Ch.8, Sec.3, 1.11
Special attention paid to DNV rule, particularly for electric
motors installed permanently exposed to open deck, apart on the requirement of minimum protection of IP 56 rating and anti- condensation heater, the following technical requirement is to adhere with regardless of hazardous or non-hazardous space:- IP Rating For Exposed Deck Electric Equipment
1) Naturally cooled type, i.e. without external cooling fan
2) Vertically mounting type and equipped with an additional steel preventing ingress of water or snow into any external ventilator.
In the event, if the above two requirements cannot be met,
and the motor will be used in port only, the classification will accept provided the motor shall equipped with a signboard stating the usage is only in port only and be provided with additional covers (e.g. tarpaulins) at sea.
The above does not supersede any other requirement for
hazardous area open deck installation.
Reference to offshore stringent requirement, most
classification societies, i.e., refer to ABS Modu code Pt. 4, Ch.3, Sec.1, 15, it states that compliance with the recognized national standards will also be considered. Example, USCG, NPD, DMA, etc.
