IP Rating For Exposed Deck

Electric Equipment
Ingress Protection Rating For Electrical Equipment Exposed to
Open Deck

„ Reference is made to Marine classification societies, like DNV,


ABS, and with respect to IEC 92 Publication recommendations
on Ingress Protection (IP) of electric equipment permanently
installed in open deck.

„ There is a reference table given in the respective rulebook as


guidance on the compliance of IP protection of electric
equipment in various locations of the ship, rig or platform.

„ Citing example of rule: DNV rule 2003, Pt.4, Ch.8, Sec.10,


B200, Table B1:-
„ ABS MODU rule 2001, Pt. 4, Ch.3,
Sec.1, 15 and Sec. 3.1.1:-
„ ABS rule 2003, Pt.4, Ch.8, Sec.3, 1.11

„ Special attention paid to DNV rule, particularly for electric


motors installed permanently exposed to open deck, apart on
the requirement of minimum protection of IP 56 rating and anti-
condensation heater, the following technical requirement is to
adhere with regardless of hazardous or non-hazardous space:-

1) Naturally cooled type, i.e. without external cooling fan


2) Vertically mounting type and equipped with an
additional steel preventing ingress of water or snow
into any external ventilator.

„ In the event, if the above two requirements cannot be met,


and the motor will be used in port only, the classification will
accept provided the motor shall equipped with a signboard
stating the usage is only in port only and be provided with
additional covers (e.g. tarpaulins) at sea.

„ The above does not supersede any other requirement for


hazardous area open deck installation.

„ Reference to offshore stringent requirement, most


classification societies, i.e., refer to ABS Modu code Pt. 4,
Ch.3, Sec.1, 15, it states that compliance with the recognized
national standards will also be considered. Example, USCG,
NPD, DMA, etc.
