A Tour to the Cell

Discussion 2: Development of Cell Theory

Development of Cell Theory
Robert Hooke
Coined the name cell. He studied a piece of
cork from an old oak tree and noticed it was
divided up into little chambers.

The image was then published in his book,

Micrographia.
Development of Cell Theory
Matthias Schleiden
A botanist who studied the plants using
microscopes.

Eventually, he realized that all the plants

he looked at were made of cells.
Development of Cell Theory
Theodore Schwann
He studied the animals using
microscopes.

Eventually, he realized that all animal

parts he looked at were made-up of
cells.
Development of Cell Theory
Rudolf Virchow
He proved that cells did indeed come
from other cells.

But the research he used to prove this

came from a German Jewish scientist
named Robert Remak
Cell Theory
Cells are the basic unit of life
A cell is the smallest entity that exhibits all
characteristics of life.
Cell Theory
All organisms are composed of one or more cells
Single-celled organisms like bacteria are called
prokaryotes. Multicellular organisms like plants,
animals, fungi, and protists are called eukaryotes.
Cell Theory
All cells came from pre-existing cells
Unicellular or multicellular organisms perform cell
division. This process allows growth and
development among organisms.
