Introduction

A circuit breaker is an automatically operated electrical switch designed to protect an

electrical circuit from damage caused by excess current from an overload or short circuit.
Its basic function is to interrupt current flow after a fault is detected.

IEC Standard

IEC 60898-1

This part of IEC 60898 applies to ac circuit breaker for operation at 50Hz, 60Hz, or 50/60Hz, having a
rated voltage not exceeding 440V, a rated current not exceeding 125A and a rated short-circuit
breaking capacity not exceeding 25000A or 25kA.

IEC 60947-2

This part of IEC 60947-2 series applies to circuit breakers, the main contacts of which are intended to
be connected to circuits, the rated voltage of which does not exceed 1000V ac or 1500V dc.

Risks of Electrical Currents

Electricity has a lot of advantages, but there are also a lot of risks,

a. Fire
- Injuries
- Damage to properties
- Death
b. Electric Shock
- Injuries/ Harm to human health
- Death
c. Malfunctions (e.g. Equipment, Machines)
- Accidents
- Interrupted Work
- Damage to Equipment

Strict installation rules have been set up by IEC.

10 PPH - Eco Solutions Team

Risks of Electrical Currents

Damage to Equipment

• Certain electrical equipment may be damaged or destroyed by high currents.

• Case for motors during prolonged operation above rated load and cables if too many devices
are connected.
• Overcurrent provokes excessive temperature rise to conductors and may lead to insulation
breakdown and the flow of an earth fault current.
• This may remain at a low level, difficult to detect or rapidly degenerate into short-circuit and
provoke major damage.

11 PPH - Eco Solutions Team

Risks of Electrical Currents

Electric Shocks

• Protection measures against electric shocks are described in

IEC 60364-4-41.
• The physiological reactions of the human body to current flow in amperage levels demonstrate in
IEC 60479-1.
• Given the current levels considered dangerous, a maximum permissible value of 30mA is
considered safe.

12 PPH - Eco Solutions Team

Risks of Electrical Currents

Fire Hazards

84% of fire incidents in the Philippines are because of electrical

faults.

1. Improper electrical installation

2. Old installations (wearing of insulations)
3. Substandard, low quality electrical products

Linear Heat detection - Fiber Optics

DTS utilizes the Raman effect to measure temperature. An

optical laser pulse sent through the fiber results in
some scattered light reflecting back to the transmitting
end, where it is analyzed. The intensity of the Raman
scattering is a measure of the temperature along the
fiber.
The position of the temperature reading is determined by
measuring the arrival timing of the returning light pulse
similar to a radar echo. 59
