SUBJECT - VERB AGREEMENT

1. A singular subject takes a singular verb.


Example:
He is
She does
It has
The boy goes
The girl jumps

Note: I and you, although they are singular subjects, they require plural
forms of verbs.

Example: I walk to school.


You play piano very well.

2. A plural subject takes a plural verb.


Example:
They are
We do
have
The boys
go
The girls jump

3. When the subject is an uncountable noun, use a singular verb.


Example: The river water is dirty.

4. When the phrasal quantifier is singular, use a singular verb. When the
phrasal quantifier is plural, use a plural verb.
Examples: a) A piece of pizza costs RM4.00
b) Two pieces of pizza cost RM8.00.

5. When the collective noun is singular, use a singular verb. When the
collective noun is plural, use a plural verb.
Examples: a) A bouquet of roses is presented to the winner.
b) Several bouquets of roses are presented to all the winners.

6. When both is used with two subjects, use a plural verb.


Example: Both Qaisy and Qistina like to eat spaghetti.

7. Use a singular verb with each, every and one of.


Examples: a) Each of the girls wears a black ribbon.
b) Every pupil has to have a personal file.
c) One of the teachers is my mother.

8. When two or more subjects are joined by and, use a plural verb.
Examples: a) Elly and her sister are pretty.
b) My parents and my brother have gone to Europe for a
vacation.
