Context:
Your English class has listened to, read, and viewed a variety of visual and print texts featuring
different representations of Australia’s peoples, histories and cultures. You have also examined key
elements of the Australian flag, which represents us as a nation.
Your task is to analyse and persuade a Senate Committee that the flag you have selected best
reflects modern Australia.

Task: Select one (1) of the proposed new Australian flag designs. Prepare and write a persuasive
text response that justifies why this alternative design better represents contemporary Australian
society.
Details
1. You will need to deconstruct the elements within the flag’s design using the semiotics of visual
language as discussed in class. Ensure you explain the meanings of each of the elements (e.g.
symbols, colour, positioning, objects, size, etc.).
2. You can make reference to the current Australian flag’s symbols and colours in contrast to the
new flag; however, this is not required.
3. Your teacher will provide a model response for you to use as a reference.

Conditions:
 400-450 words.
 70-minute exam.
 2 days’ notice of exam question. Teacher to assist with planning response.
 One page of dot-point notes permitted in exam.
