Guiding Unit Question: How many items can you buy with 20$ to fill a Christmas Child Shoebox?

Lesson Goal(s): - Engage in financial role playing transactions

- Connect mathematical concepts to other areas (daily lives) Kindergarten
- Explore the use of available tools and technologies to extend capabilities (ipads, scissors, etc.)

Connecting Activity: We have been learning the name/attributes of coins in Math, and about needs/wants in
Social Studies. Also we read the notice about Operation Christmas Child and made a chart of items needed for
shoeboxes. Tell students we want to fill 4 shoeboxes, each with as many items as we can so we need to find the Essential Supports
best price for the items on our chart. Using ipads and the flipp app, everyone will search for the items on the (designed for 1, useful for 1)
chart and write the prices they find. - 1 on 1 support with Ipad
Mini Lesson: Students get play coins/ paper bills and a box to be their “shoebox”. They must refer to the chart - Review what items are
and ”buy” as many items as they can for their shoebox. Because K’s aren’t required to know value of coins, we needed
would have objects in piles according to cost and a money value “cheat sheet” available with the value of each
coin/bil. Afterwards we would discuss 1. how many items they got 2. how many different items (discuss why 4
toothbrushes that were less coins wouldn’t be as useful). Targeted Support
(designed for some, useful for some)

Transforming & Personalizing Activity: What are some of the things you ”need” at home? What are copy of items on our chart so
some things that are “wants”? Sorting activity: items you need on one side, items you want on other. If can refer to at their tables as
you were filling a shoebox for yourself and had $20, what items would you buy? needed
