Experiment No.3
Objective: determine the percentage of Available Chlorine in the given sample of Bleaching
powder.
Principle/Theory:

Apparatus: Iodine flask,beaker,burrette,funnel,aluminium sheet,pipette,spatula.

Chemicals Required:
KI: Irritant
H2SO4: Corrosive,irritant,permeator
Na2S2O3: Irritant,permeator

Procedure:
i. First an iodine flask was taken and 10ml bleach solution was taken in it.
ii. Then 5ml distilled water was added in this solution.
iii. Also we added 10ml of dil H2SO4 and 1 grams of potassium iodide.
iv. As the potassium iodide is added, the color of solution turns brown.
v. This solution was titrated against Na2S2O4 which was taken in a burrette and added
dropwise.
vi. At a point the brown color changes to straw color.
vii. Then 1ml of starch indicator was added due to which color of solution turned blue.
viii. Solution was again titrated against Na2S2O4 and was titrated till the blue color
disappears and that is our endpoint.
ix. Volume used was noted and two readings were taken carefully.
