Seed Germination Experiment Lab Report

Problem/Question (What question will your experiment be answering?)
It will be answering how fast do beans and corn can grow in light and darkness.

Hypothesis: (What exactly are you proving or disproving with this experiment?)
If corn and beans are exposed to light, then they would grow faster than ones in darkness.

Experiment: [This is what you are doing with the seeds in the bags in different locations.]
I put three seeds in four Ziploc bags and they're separated with Bobby pins. Each bag has a
damp paper towel in it. Two of the bags have beans and the others have corn seeds. Two
are in sun light while the others are in darkness
Independent variable: light
Dependent variable: length of seeds

Observation: [This is what you are doing by measuring in the spreadsheet.]
I'm observing the seeds as they grow.??

Analysis: [Your graphs will be in your spreadsheet, and you will answer these questions
below, as you go through the experiment.]

A. Which seeds germinate first, the ones grown in the dark or the ones grown in the
light? The beans in the dark
B. What part of the plant (roots or shoots) emerged from the seed first? Explain why.
Roots because of gravity.
C. Examine the roots carefully. What do you notice after a couple of days? They stem
out like a tree
D. In which direction did the roots grow? Was this true for all seeds? All grew Down
E. In which direction did the shoots grow? Was this true for all seeds? Up but two went
down
F. For the seeds grown in the light, which grew faster the roots or the shoots? (Analyze
your data to really find out!)roots
G. For the seeds grown in the dark, which grew faster the roots or the shoots? Shoots
H. Were there any colour differences between the seeds grown in the dark and the
seeds grown in the light? Explain. There where no differences

Conclusion: [ Did you prove or disprove your hypothesis? Why? And what were some
mistakes that happened in your experiment that the next scientist could know to avoid?] I
disproved my hypothesis because the ones in the dark grew faster. A mistake that I made
was that I killed like half of my seeds.
