Design an informative t-shirt to showcase your compound and the

two elements that made the compound.

Step one: Research

 Choose one metal and one non-metal as your two elements.
 Get approval from your teacher before you start designing your
t-shirt.
 Find more information about your chosen elements through
searching online.
 Record this information in the provided graphic organizer.

Step two: Design your shirt

 See “Design your shirt”.

Step three: Presentation

 Be prepared to talk about your element in front of the class
for about 2 minutes.
STEP ONE: RESEARCH

1) Use a Chromebook to look for more information about your chosen elements. Here are
some helpful resources.
 Chem4Kids
 Ducksters
 About.com
 Web Elements
 Chemical Elements
Or borrow “The Elements” book from Room 308.
2) Fill out the graphic organizer below with information about each element. All this
information will need to appear on your t-shirt.

STEP TWO: Design your own t-shirt (using a new/clean white t-shirt)

Design Your Creative Juices Flowing! Be Artistic!

Your designer t-shirt must include the following for each element, on each side of
the shirt.
 A picture of the element at room temperature (either from online or hand-drawn).
Think about where you want to place it: center? Top Corner? Bottom corner? (2 pts)

 Draw a 2-D sketch of your atom with the protons, neutrons, and electrons
represented in their correct locations and be their correct respective sizes (like what
you had in your atom model project). (3 pts)

 Include the element name, number of protons, neutrons, and electrons (2 pts)

 All the information outlined in the graphic organizer (a mixture of illustration and
written information). (Basic Facts: 2pts, Interesting Facts: 3 pts, Physical Properties: 3
pts, chemical properties: 2pts) - total of 10 pts

 Include the Electron Configuration of each element (both long way and Noble Gas
Abbreviations) (2 pts)

 Include the orbital Notation of the element with proper labeling (2 pts)

 Draw three pictures of different uses for this element (3 pts)

 Have a sample of everyday use or ordinary something in which the element is used on
the shirt. (extra credit).
Compound (Product)
Your designer t-shirt must include the following for the product (compound), on
each sleeve.
 Write a balance equation when the two elements are combined together. Determine
whether the product is ionic or covalent. Name the product. Draw the electron dot
and structural formulas of the product. (8 pts)

 Draw an everyday use of the product. (2 pts)

 Have an actual sample of everyday use or ordinary something in which the compound
is used on the sleeves. (extra Credit)

 Creativity and Neatness (10 pts)

Grading will be based on how well you carry out the above procedures. 50 pts
for each side.

Rubric:
Creativity & Neatness 10
Include all of the above items 34
Presentation (see step 3 requirements) 6
Extra Credit 5

Total: 100 + 10 extra points

STEP THREE: Presentation

Be ready to speak about the information on your t-shirt (6pts)

 Remember to make eye-contact and stand with good posture

(1 pt)
 Make sure your speaking volume is loud enough for your
audience (1pt)
 The tone of your voice should sound animated and interested. (2
pts)
 The length of your presentation must be between 1min and 45
sec to 2 minutes and 15 sec (2 min plus or minus 15 sec). (2 pts)
