Test 2 Math 2201 Online Fall 2022 NAME __________________________________________________________

DIRECTIONS: Show all work and intermediate steps .This exam is to be completed individually without
technology or any other source except your own 3”x5” notecard. You are permitted to use your notecard
and any calculator you like. Please scan all pages (including both sides of your notecard) and upload to the
icollege folder entitled “Unit 2 Exam” by 11:45am. Feel free to print the exam and write directly on the
paper, OR you can use your own paper to answer the questions neatly, OR you may download this pdf and
create a digital document with your ipad or other similar device. Use the methods discussed in class to
complete each problem to the best of your ability and show all necessary steps to justify mastery points.
Good Luck! Math on! 😊😊

1. (4 pts each) For f (x) = 2x 3 − 3x 2 −12x , answer each of the questions that follow. Use calculus to
answer each question. Using the graph only will not garner mastery points.

a) Find all critical values of f(x). (+2 bonus – What are the two ways that x can be a critical value for
f(x)?)

b) Give the interval(s) of x for which the function is increasing. Use either interval notation OR
inequality notation.

1
c) Give the interval(s) of x where the function is decreasing. Use either interval notation OR
inequality notation.

d) Write the local max and local min as ordered pairs. Please label which is the max and which is the
min.

e) Find the point of inflection and write as an ordered pair.

f) Give all intervals of x for which the function is concave up and concave down.

2. Researchers have discovered that by controlling both the temperature (Celsius) and relative
humidity (%) in a building, the amount of a certain fungus can be limited. The mathematical model
for the relationship between the temperature and relative humidity for this limited growth is given
as: 𝑅𝑅(𝑇𝑇) = −0.0011𝑇𝑇 3 + 0.1005 𝑇𝑇 2 − 2.6876𝑇𝑇 + 98.171, 𝑓𝑓𝑓𝑓𝑓𝑓 15 ≤ 𝑇𝑇 ≤ 46 where R(T) is the
relative humidity and T is temperature.

a) (6 pts) Find the temperature which the relative humidity is minimized. Please include units on
the answer.

b) (4 pts) What is the minimum relative humidity? (Please include units on the answer)

3. Find the first derivative of each function using the short cut rules outlined in ch4. Simplify your
answer with at least two steps of algebra as we did in class to clean up the answer. 😊😊

a) (+2 bonus) 𝑝𝑝(𝛽𝛽) = ln𝑒𝑒 3𝛽𝛽 + sin(𝑥𝑥)

3
b) (8 pts) 𝑔𝑔(𝑥𝑥) = 𝑒𝑒11𝑥𝑥 (sin(𝑥𝑥)) + 3𝜋𝜋

c) (8 pts) 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) = sin(3𝑒𝑒 − 4𝑥𝑥) + 𝜋𝜋𝜋𝜋𝜋𝜋𝜋𝜋8 (𝑥𝑥) + 62𝑥𝑥

4
ln(𝑥𝑥)
d) (8 pts) 𝐹𝐹(𝑥𝑥) =
sec(3𝑥𝑥)

4𝑥𝑥 2
e) (8 pts) 𝐺𝐺(𝑥𝑥) = 5 csc(𝑥𝑥) −
𝑒𝑒 𝑥𝑥

7
f) (8 pts) 𝑦𝑦(𝑡𝑡) = 𝑡𝑡 3 (𝑡𝑡 4 + 7) 2

g) (8 pts) 𝑔𝑔(𝑧𝑧) = 𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙2 (𝑧𝑧 2 + 𝑧𝑧 + 1)

4. A particle moves with velocity 𝑣𝑣(𝑡𝑡) = 𝑡𝑡 2 + 3𝑡𝑡 − 1 ft/min, for 0 < 𝑡𝑡 < 10 𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚.

a) (4 pts) Find function that represents the particle’s acceleration after any time ‘t’.

b) (4 pts) Find the particle’s acceleration at 8 seconds. Be sure to label your answer with correct
units.

c) (+2 bonus) At what time will the velocity be minimized on the interval given (if ever)?

MORE BONUS:
Fill in each blank correctly for 1 bonus point.

1) “nah nah nah nah, nah nah nah nah, HEY HEY HEY, ___________________________________ !!!!!!!

2) “Oh, I’ve been so down and under pressure. _________________________________________________, yeah.”
