I scaffold my vocabulary
use throughout the year. I
usually provide key terms
and subject specific
vocabulary at the
beginning of the year. In
the middle I no longer
provide definitions, and
at the end of the year I
ask that students go
through the text
themselves and pick out
words they do not know
and find definitions for
those words relevant to
the content.

As a department, we set
out goals at the beginning
of each semester in term
of curriculum and skills.
For example, this
semester my department
is using a scaffolded
approach to reading and
analyzing primary
sources.

I incorporate knowledge
checks into my lessons.
These knowledge checks
are all recall in nature
and so if students are
struggling with the
knowledge check, then I
know I need to go back
and review some material
before moving on.
Perhaps I need to
approach the content in a
different way to ensure
equitable access.
