sector and to the preservation, rescue and valuation of Colombia's cultural
heritage. Within the product portfolio of Artesanías de Colombia® is the
ethnic section, whose theme is the identity and symbolism of the country's
ethnic groups.

The Cuna or Tule, as they call themselves, are indigenous horticulturists who
inhabit the Gulf of Urabá. The women make Molas or rectangles made with
the "Reverse Application" (Appliqué) of colored fabrics, in which
representations of the environment and reality that they incorporate into
the decoration of their blouses come to life. They learned this technique from
the European missionaries and applied it to translate the designs of body
paint into their outfits, taking advantage of the availability of imported
fabrics, cloths, threads, needles, scissors and thimbles.

In the imaginary of the artisans, the origin of the Molas is assimilated with a
dangerous place from beyond, Kalú Tupuis, where the scissors specialists
lived. Since the men could not enter, they delegated as a spy the daughter of
a shaman, OlonaguelidiIi, who was the first to see the designs of the Molas,
witnessing how the women cut and sewn on a large table full of large fabrics.
Since then, the technique has been transmitted from generation to
generation, as a means of "writing" and expression. The Molas, elements of
the feminine universe, are associated with the profane, while the songs and
words learned by men are part of the sacred sphere.

Target market: Entirely family (All ages).

Price: Varies by size and complexity of designs. Between $ 50,000 COP and $600.000
