HEAT FROM THE SOLAR

Miss Hunt
Year 3

Context: In year three this year we have loved experimenting with different items of food. The class
are learning about how heat can be produced in many ways.

Brief: The class is going to use opened ended recyclable materials to

create a heat conducting oven, to melt items of food using heat.

Materials:
You can use any materials presented in front of you
 Box
 Aluminium foil
 Paper
 Cylinders
 Cellophane
 Sun
 Recyclable materials
 Sticks
 Plastic
 Sticky tape
 Duck tape
 Ruler
 Cardboard pizza boxes
 Black paper
 Marshmallows
 Chocolate

Limitation: Children are given 40 minutes to plan and to produce their solar power oven. They are in
groups of 3-4 students. They have to use the materials given to them to create the oven. But they
are not limited to what they take and how much.

Deliverables: They have to deliver a working solar oven that has appropriate heat conducting
materials.

Safety: Children are supervised when using sharp materials such as scissors. The children are also to
be wearing hats and sunscreen when sitting the in sun outside.

Procedure:
1. The children are put in groups
2. They are to grab a piece of paper, pen and ruler to measure out their design
3. The children are to plan and design on a piece of paper looking at the items in front of them
4. The children should also consider when planning what materials are good at conducting heat
5. Once the children have finished the are to check with the teacher the plan
6. The children are given a variety of materials to use to create their plans
7. The children should start to construct their solar ovens
8. Once the children have put together the ovens the teacher will come around and check and
they can start cutting out and sticking with supervision of teacher.
9. The students are then able to stick together their oven.
10. Once completed the children are ready to test it out
11. The children are to choose between a marshmallow or chocolate block and place the oven
in the sun so it gains optimal results
12. The children will then write out the location, where in the sun is the oven placed and what
item they used. They will then start to time how long it takes to melt.
13. The next lesson the children will compare each of the groups results.

Evaluating:. The children are evaluated on how they work as a team to collaboratively create a solar
heat powered oven to use heat conducted materials to melt food. They will be assessed on their
teamwork, planning, communication and effect constructing skills as well as how well the oven
works (heat conducted materials).

Presentation: The children are to present a solar power oven, that used recyclable heat conducting
materials.
