What Does it Mean to be a Global Citizen?

By Ronald C. Israel

1) At The Global Citizens’ Initiative we say that a “global citizen is someone who identifies with
being part of an emerging world community and whose actions contribute to building this
community’s values and practices.”

- The purpose of word And is Addition because it connects the two independent clause to being
compound.

2) To test the validity of this definition we examine its basic assumptions: (a) that there is such a
thing as an emerging world community with which people can identify; and (b) that such a
community has a nascent set of values and practices.

- The purpose of To is addition it used to start the thought. While Its is referent (for test the
validity of this definition) of a sentence. That is subordinating conjunctions of the sentence. Also
And is addition to add another sentence.

3) Historically, human beings have always formed communities based on shared identity. Such
identity gets forged in response to a variety of human needs— economic, political, religious and
social. As group identities grow stronger, those who hold them organize into communities,
articulate their shared values, and build governance structures to support their beliefs.

- The purpose of to, as, and is addition to connect the two ideas or thoughts of literature and
history of a global citizens.

4) Today, the forces of global engagement are helping some people identify as global citizens
who have a sense of belonging to a world community. This growing global identity in large part
is made possible by the forces of modern information, communications and transportation
technologies. In increasing ways these technologies are strengthening our ability to connect to
the rest of the world—through the Internet; through participation in the global economy; through
the ways in which world-wide environmental factors play havoc with our lives; through the
empathy we feel when we see pictures of humanitarian disasters in other countries; or through
the ease with which we can travel and visit other parts of the world.

- The purpose of to, and, as or, increasing ways is addition to connect the two ideas or
thoughts in the paragraph. This is referent (to the forces of global engagement are helping
some people) of a sentence. While, which used as subordinating conjunction of a sentence.

allegiances to our countries, ethnicities and political beliefs. These traditional identities give
meaning to our lives and will continue to help shape who we are.

- To, and is used as Addition to responsibilities and build a sustainable values-based world
community in statement or thought of a sentence while but used as Contrast that shows

prevention of conflicts between countries, elimination of weapons of mass destruction,
humanitarian assistance and preservation of cultural diversity.

accountability and transparency and, most important of all from a global citizenship perspective,
an absence of mechanisms that enable greater citizen participation in the institutions of global

processes of global governance organizations; adopting and promoting changes in behavior

traditions.

journey. Our eyes have been opened and our consciousness raised. Instinctively, we feel a
connection with others around the world yet we lack the adequate tools, resources, and support
to act on our vision. Our ways of thinking and being are still colored by the trapping of old
allegiances and ways of seeing things that no longer are as valid as they used to be. There is a
longing to pull back the veil that keeps us from more clearly seeing the world as a whole and
finding more sustainable ways of connecting with those who share our common humanity.

“Severn Suzuki Speech”
In Severn Suzuki’s speech, her concern for the world’s situation is too much for
a twelve years old girl that should be just enjoying schools, friends, and material things.
Instead, at a very young age, she carries almost all of the problems in our environment
by thinking of what she can do to avoid the destroying of our mother earth and its
animals living in the forest, even the future of the kids in her generation. She sounds so
desperate to save the forests, natural resources, animals and people from all of the
greedy deeds of those who has a power of money. “Did you have to worry of these
things when you were my age? All this is happening before our eyes and yet we
act as if we have all the time we want and all the solutions. I’m only a child and I
don’t have all the solutions, but I want you to realize, neither do you. You don’t
know how to fix the holes in our ozone layer. You don’t know how to bring the
salmon back up a dead stream. You don’t know how to bring back an animal now
extinct. And you can’t bring back the forest that once grew where there is now a
desert. If you don’t know how to fix it, please stop breaking it.” In that line from her
speech, she says all of the things the adults, especially the government can’t control
and don’t have any possible way to solve/fix if it is totally damage, just like our ozone
layer. Her emotions there were hopeless, because no mortal can bring back what’s God
has made if it is broken or already extinct. “In my country we make so much waste,
we buy and throw away, buy and throw away, buy and throw away and yet
Northern countries will not share with the needy. If a child on the street who has
nothing is willing to share, why are we who have everything still so greedy?” In
that line, she is disappointed to those who has the money yet still greedy. You can
sense how she is disgusted to those who only care for themselves. Over all emotion
that contains her speech is anger and hope. Anger for those people that continue to
break the world, kills animals, and also kills the future of today’s children. Hope for a
change. Change of the behavior of the government and great businessman and hope
for the changes in our damaged world for it to bloom again.

“COVID-19: A Worldwide Dilemma”

The disease most of the people in the world are suffering right now came from
coronavirus and now called “COVID-19”. The 19 in its name came from 2019, since the sudden
spread of this disease started in that year. The origin of this virus is in Wuhan, China where it is
believed that there is a wet market that sold both dead and live animals including fish and
birds. The animal source of the latest outbreak has not yet been identified, but the original host
is thought to be bats. Bats were not sold at the Wuhan market but may have infected live
chickens or other animals sold there. As of today (March 25, 2020), there are 422,614 total
cases of infected people all over the world, and 18,892 total deaths. There is no known cure yet
to this virus but many has recovered by just medication given from the hospitals. There are
108,879 total recovered people. Adults, children, senior citizens and especially those who has
complications in respiratory system and has cancers are prone to covid-19 and also those who
has weak immune system have less possibility of recovering from the virus when they got
infected because they may develop more serious symptoms like pneumonia or bronchitis at the
same time, being infected by coronavirus which it weakens our respiratory system People who
recovered from the virus is believed to have a strong immune system that’s why the virus in
their body got defeated eventually.

Like cold and flu bugs, the virus is spread via droplets when a person coughs or
sneezes. The droplets land on surfaces and are picked up on the hands of others and spread
further. People catch the virus when they touch their infected hands to their mouth, nose or
eyes. You can catch a virus from person to person, like those who has close contact to one
another. People who are infected by the virus may have the following symptoms: fever, cough,
runny nose, and shortens of breath. There are rumors that people might don’t feel any
symptoms but they are already infected by the virus. That’s the reason why the government
worldwide are doing this thing called “community quarantine”. It is used to separate and restrict
the movement of well persons who may have been exposed to the disease to see if they
become ill. These people may have been exposed to a disease and do not know it, or they may
have the disease but do not show symptoms. Quarantine can also help limit the spread of covid-
19. While on a community quarantine, people are required to stay in their houses and required
to have indoor activities such as work and learning.

Here in the Philippines, we have a total case of 552 people who has covid-19, a total
case of 35 deaths, and a total case of 20 people who has fully recovered from the disease. The
Philippine Government and the Department of Health (DOH) are making their way to solve the
current situation of our beloved country and its people. Community quarantine is good and an
effective way to prevent the spread of the covid-19 and the lost of lives, but somehow, it also
has an effect to the people below mid-class. Most of the people don’t eat three (3) times a day,
so they can have a meal for tomorrow. Since the public transportation are unavailable, they
can’t go to work and have the money to spend for their daily needs like food. They are forced to
work even their life’s at risk. When an interviewer asked one of those people, why they still go to
work, their response is, “We won’t die from the virus, we will die because of hunger we’re going
through when we don’t work.” The Government only got mad for being stubborn of the people
who kept on leaving their home, but one thing they don’t know is those people don’t have a
choice. Lately, the government have worked on that problem, they gave funds for the needs of
poor people so they don’t have to leave their houses anymore. Second affected by this, is the
innocent children of the nation. The education system has also got affected. The Department of
Education (DepEd) required an online learning system during community quarantine to filled the
lessons and activities left for the last quarter of the school year.

As a student I witnessed this situation and I must say that this is not effective for those students
who don’t have computers/laptops/phones and an internet connection in their houses. Maybe,
this online learning is convenient for those mid-class family but not for those who have nothing
but enough money to be used for their basic needs.

In the positive side of life, I have observed that this situation has also a good cause, first
thing is, we got more time for our family. We bond more together with them and children have
become more open to their parents. We also learned the importance of being healthy and
having a good hygiene is a must. There are ways to prevent being infected by the covid-19: (1)
Always wash your hands with soap. (2) Use alcohol/sanitizers frequently. (3) When going
outside, use a mask that covers your nose and mouth. (4) Don’t leave the house when not
necessary. (5) Follow the government’s command and program, because the safety of the
nation and its people are their focus. Last but not the least is to Pray and trust the Lord. In
situations like this, only God has the answers to our questions. To trust him and not being afraid
of any circumstances is what we have to do. He can move a mountain, for Him nothing is
impossible. People, let’s pray for our self, for our family, for the nation and for the world. In
Jesus name, this crisis will end soon!
