1. Compare the performance of the ideal ramjet to a real ramjet 1 given by parameters in Table 1
over the ranges 1.25 ≤ 𝑀𝑀∞ ≤ 4 and 1100 𝐾𝐾 ≤ 𝑇𝑇04 ≤ 2000 𝐾𝐾 and at an altitude of 10 km and
using jet A for fuel (lower heating value, 𝑄𝑄𝑅𝑅 = 45 𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀/𝑘𝑘𝑘𝑘) by doing the following:
a. Make contour plots of the ratios of performance values at every point which gives a
(𝒯𝒯/𝑚𝑚̇ ) 𝑚𝑚̇𝑓𝑓 /𝒯𝒯
non-imaginary and positive value. i.e., plot (𝒯𝒯/𝑚𝑚̇ 𝑎𝑎) 𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑙𝑙 , 𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟
,
𝑎𝑎 𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖 𝑚𝑚̇𝑓𝑓 /𝒯𝒯
𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖
(𝜂𝜂0 )𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟 𝜂𝜂𝑝𝑝 𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟 (𝜂𝜂𝑡𝑡 )𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟𝑟
,
(𝜂𝜂0 )𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖 𝜂𝜂𝑝𝑝
, (𝜂𝜂 )
𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖 𝑡𝑡 𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖

b. Include your plots from Assignment 3 to provide context for the performance trends for
the ideal ramjet.
c. Comment briefly on your main observations to compare the real and ideal engines.

Table 1. Parameters for the real ramjet.

𝛾𝛾𝑑𝑑 = 1.4, 𝑟𝑟𝑑𝑑 = 0.75

𝛾𝛾𝑏𝑏 = 1.2, 𝑟𝑟𝑏𝑏 = 1.00
𝛾𝛾𝑛𝑛 = 1.25, 𝑟𝑟𝑛𝑛 = 0.97
𝑀𝑀𝑒𝑒 = 3.0

2. A naïve director of sales and marketing sold a new turbojet engine design that was touted to
provide isentropic performance of all aerodynamic components (inlet, nozzle, turbine and
compressor) for the design parameters given in Table 2. Despite the best efforts of world-class
engineers, the turbine efficiency achieved in the as-built engine was found to be 𝜂𝜂𝑡𝑡 = 0.875 and
the compressor efficiency 𝜂𝜂𝑐𝑐 = 0.80.
a. Going from the as-sold to the as-built engine, how much does overall efficiency decrease 2
for this turbojet at its design conditions?
b. Report on the changes to specific thrust, thrust specific fuel consumption, propulsion
efficiency and thermal efficiency.
c. If the engine produces 115 kN of thrust, how much more fuel (in kilograms) will the as-built
engine burn per hour of operation compared to the as-sold engine?
d. Assuming $4/gallon fuel prices for Jet A, estimate the hourly cost difference to operate this
engine compared to the as-sold engine.

Table 2. Design parameters for a new turbojet engine.
𝑀𝑀∞ 0.80
ℎ 15 km
𝑝𝑝𝑟𝑟𝑐𝑐 30
𝑇𝑇04 2000 K
𝑄𝑄𝑅𝑅 45 MJ/kg
Assume 𝛾𝛾 = 1.4, 𝑅𝑅 = 287 𝐽𝐽/𝑘𝑘𝑘𝑘𝑘𝑘 throughout the engine (i.e., 𝑅𝑅𝑝𝑝𝑝𝑝𝑝𝑝𝑝𝑝𝑝𝑝𝑝𝑝𝑝𝑝𝑝𝑝 = 𝑅𝑅𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎 ). Assume any
component efficiencies not given are equal to 1 and that the nozzle exhaust pressure is equal to the
ambient pressure.
